☦️ The Holy Prophet Zachary and the Righteous Elizabeth, Parents of St. John the Baptist

Today, September 5, the Byzantine Church commemorates the Holy Prophet Zachary and the Righteous Elizabeth, the parents of St. John the Baptist and Forerunner of the Lord.

Zachary was a priest who faithfully served God in the Temple, while Elizabeth was a righteous woman who remained steadfast in faith despite many years of childlessness. In their old age, God answered their prayers and blessed them with a son, John, who would prepare the way for Christ.

Their lives remind us that God remains faithful to His promises, even when His timing is difficult for us to understand. Zachary and Elizabeth teach us to persevere in prayer, to trust in God’s providence, and to remain faithful in the vocation He has given us.

Through the prayers of the Holy Prophet Zachary and the Righteous Elizabeth, may the Lord strengthen our families, bless parents in their sacred vocation, and raise up from our homes men and women willing to dedicate their lives completely to Christ.

Holy Prophet Zachary and Righteous Elizabeth, pray to God for us! ☦️

Today, September 1, the Byzantine Church celebrates the beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year. ☦️

As we begin a new liturgical year, we give thanks to God for the year that has passed and entrust the year ahead to His providence.

May this new year be a time of renewed faith, deeper prayer, repentance, and growth in Christ. May the Lord bless the work of our hands and guide us in all that we do for His glory.

A blessed Ecclesiastical New Year to all!

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever! ☦️

Beheading of the Holy and Glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John ☦️

Today the Church commemorates the martyrdom of the Forerunner, who suffered for boldly proclaiming the truth and preparing the way of the Lord.

Troparion • Tone 2
The just man is remembered with praises, but for you the Lord’s testimony suffices, O Forerunner, for you truly became more honorable than the prophets and were deemed worthy to baptize the One foretold. Then you suffered for the truth and joyfully announced to those in Hades that God appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and offering us great mercy.

Kontakion • Tone 5
The Forerunner’s glorious beheading came to be a form of dispensation divine, that he might proclaim to those in Hades the message of the coming of the Saviour. Let Herodias shed tears of lament for a lawless murder that was her request; for she loved a false and transitory age rather than God’s law and the age of life.

Holy Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John, pray to God for us! ☦️
