"Dear Friends of Life,

Aurora, South Elgin, Rockford, and Springfield, Illinois have all seen arrests related to human trafficking during the past two weeks. This is an epidemic "hidden in plain sight" not just in our state, but around the world. People are not disposable. People are not possessions to be bought and sold. People are created in the image of God and loved so much that He sent His only Son to pay the price of redemption for them. How do we who love and honor Him respond to this part of the hurting world around us?"

The Pandemic

Ever prayed hard and heard nothing back?

A preacher answered that question 1,600 years ago. His answer might sting a little. His name was John Chrysostom. The name means "Golden Mouth." Many call him the greatest preacher who ever lived.

One Sunday around 400 AD, he was preaching on "pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks." And he pointed out the church door, at the beggars in the street.

Notice something, he told the crowd. Those men spend their whole lives asking, and receiving almost nothing. Yet they do not curse God. They thank Him. They call Him merciful.

"He that is perishing with hunger calls Him merciful. But you who are living in plenty call Him cruel."

Then came the line that still stops people cold:

"When you are weary of praying, and do not receive, consider how often you have heard a poor man calling upon you, and have not listened to him. And he has not been angry, nor insulted you."

When God seems silent toward you, He is still gentler than you were to the man you walked past. And that man never cursed you for saying no.

Chrysostom said God sent the poor into the world "as common teachers." Teachers of gratitude. Teachers of patience.

Telling truth like that made powerful enemies. The empress herself had him exiled, twice. He died on a forced march, driven from everything he loved.

His last recorded words? "Glory to God for all things."

That is a man who practiced what he preached.
