Exodus 14:14 “The LORD will fight for you; you must be quiet.”

Few of us have experienced being chased by an army of warriors like the Israelites have. When they were faced with what seemed like an insurmountable barrier to safety, the Red Sea, Moses told them, “The LORD will fight for you; you must be quiet.” What battles are you fighting that you should give to the Lord? Troubles in your marriage, sickness, financial problems, whatever it is, submit to Him and let the LORD fight for you.

Calling on the Lord to fight your battles means you do not have to be distressed, discouraged, or distraught when unforeseen battles occur in your life. You may have recently fought a battle, are fighting one now, or one is headed your way. When the situation seems hopeless or overwhelming you may be tempted to doubt God, His promises, or His ability. Like the Israelites, all Christians are to believe God’s Word, have confidence in His faithfulness, and quietly trust in Him. He has promised to take care of you (Philippians 4:19), He has good plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11), and He loves you beyond anything you can imagine (Romans 8:37-39).

Father, thank You for giving us one more day. Thank You for your precious and faithful promises. Forgive us when we take our eyes off of You and begin to doubt Your mighty power and unconditional love. Help us keep our eyes on Jesus and the truth in Your Word. May we find rest in You when the enemy attacks and trust You in all areas of our life. In Jesus’ precious and holy name we pray. Amen.

Psalms 19:12 Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults.

Most people prefer to not have their “dirty laundry” exposed. Yet, that is exactly what we should ask God to do for us, expose our hidden faults, our “dirty laundry”! During our talks with God (prayers) we ask forgiveness of our sins that we have knowingly committed. Sometimes, we tend to excuse ourselves from sins that were unintentional. We may think we have not committed a particular sin when, in fact, we really have. David reminds us that we should ask God to reveal these to us so we can be cleansed from them as well.

Old Testament law provided for forgiveness of sins committed unknowingly. But Leviticus 5:17 makes it clear that whoever commits a sin without knowing it “bears the consequences of his guilt.” Believers today, like believers in the Old Testament, are not expected to immediately and perfectly recognize every sin they commit. Accidentally doing or unintentionally saying something that influences another person to sin is an example of this. However, God knows everything we do, what we say, and what we think. He also knows our hearts and our motives. Sin hinders our relationship with our family, friends, and most importantly, with our Lord. 1 John 1:9 assures us “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

LORD God, we love You and praise You! Thank You Jesus for providing the only way to our Father in heaven. Through You we are able to be cleansed from all unrighteousness. Search us God and know our hearts. Test us and know our concerns. See if there is any offensive way in us. Lead us in the everlasting way. In Jesus’ redeeming, loving, and holy name we pray. Amen.

Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”

The phrase “generation gap” was coined in the 1950’s. There was a time, especially in rural areas of the U.S., when children rarely moved far from home. On farms they would live at home and work the land until they got married and were ready to start their own families. Through educational and advancement opportunities young folks are now able to leave home and live independently from their parents and their influence. (However, there are some who choose to forgo this and remain at home living off their parents). In my own personal experience, when I moved away from my parents, their guidance and influence, I also moved away from the LORD. During this time in my life, I was living out the parable of the Prodigal Son. There was a gap in my relationship with the LORD. From reading the Bible we can see this “gap” is not something new. Peter is speaking of a generation that is corrupt and evil. In the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 32:5, some of God’s people are called “a devious and crooked generation.”

Let this be the generation that is remembered as being saved from the corruption, crookedness, and perverseness. It starts with each person turning to Jesus and doing what is right and pleasing to the LORD.

Dear Jesus, we love You and praise You. Thank You for Your selfless sacrifice so that every human ever born has an opportunity to become a child of God. We praise Your holy name! Help us to look to You and the example You set so we may live our lives in a manner that brings honor and glory to our Father. Put someone on our path today that we can share the good news of Your redemptive sacrifice. In Your holy and redeeming name we pray. Amen.
