What do we come to The Door with? My husband and I have dealt with the addictions of family members for 25 years. We have suffered greatly, wondering what we could have done differently. I personally worked in the addiction field full time for 25 years until I retired about three years ago. We both continue to do Bible studies in the sober living homes. We do not come with judgment but with compassion for those who suffer, both the families and the individuals. We believe sobriety is possible no matter how many times you may have fallen. God’s arm is not short that it cannot reach you, even you. We believe the Word sets you free. We are different than most addiction ministries , but no less committed to your sobriety. Let us love on you and get to know you. Tell us how we can best help and support you and we will do what we can through God’s direction. This is recovery month. Let it be the beginning of a life of recovery as we stand beside you to cheer you on

At some point, constantly calling yourself an addict or saying you’re “in recovery” stops sounding humble and starts sounding like agreement with the very thing Jesus died to free you from.

I spent 13 years trapped in addiction.

I know what bo***ge feels like.
I know what shame feels like.
I know what it’s like to hate who you are and wonder if you’ll ever really change.

But once Jesus makes you new, at what point do you stop introducing yourself by the old man?

I’m not denying my past.
I’m not minimizing the battle.
I’m not pretending people don’t need help getting free. I needed help…and I help other people on a daily basis.

I’m saying I refuse to spend the rest of my life identifying with the very thing Jesus died to crucify.

He didn’t come to help me manage my addiction.
He came to put the old man in the grave and raise up a new one.

So no, I’m not in recovery.

I’m redeemed.
I’m a new creation.
And I’m not letting my past keep naming me.
