Banner of Truth

Banner of Truth Banner of Truth is a Christian publisher of books and a magazine that also organises conferences.

The Banner of Truth Trust is headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland. USA distribution is dealt with through the Banner of Truth, USA, from our office and warehouse in Carlisle, PA. We are registered as a charity in the UK, and as a non-profit corporation in the USA, and we are governed by a Board of Trustees in the UK and a Board of Directors in the USA. As a non-profit/charitable organisation, any

surplus funds that are generated are put back into the organisation and used to further the work of the Trust. The Banner of Truth Trust is not an endowed trust, and so its continued existence depends on sales of publications, donations from supporters, and the times that supporters remember the work of the Banner in their will. An important part of the work of the Banner of Truth is the Bookfund. The Bookfund is supported by the gifts of donors, and from the sales of books, and is a fund that is used to provide Banner of Truth books either free of charge or at greatly reduced prices for those who otherwise would not be able to afford them. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing financial support that we receive, and which enables the Trust to continue to publish new titles, arrange conferences, publish the magazine and operate the Bookfund. If you would like to make a donation to the work of the Banner of Truth Trust, please do so here.

Why should I fear in times of trouble? . . . God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.

Private: Ezekiel 10; Psalm 49

In this Friday Extra, we discuss our forthcoming title, ‘God Is Our Refuge and Strength: 150 Devotionals Through the Psalms’ with its authors, William Boekestein and Rob Ventura.

Through brief, practical expositions of all 150 psalms, this volume proclaims, explains, and applies each one in light of the New Testament and the finished work of Jesus Christ the Lord. These reflections are designed to enlighten the mind, warm the heart, strengthen the hands, point to the Saviour, and encourage the soul.

Among other things we ask the following:
— Why write another book on the Psalms?
— Why should we seek greater familiarity with this biblical book?
— What do we do with the 'imprecatory Psalms'?
— How can we read a Psalm with profit when we don't feel like we are connecting with it on an emotional level?

New: Thoughts on Preaching by J. W. Alexander

Few things are more helpful to preachers than the thoughts of a great preacher. In this volume we have such ‘Thoughts on Preaching’ from the illustrious pen of Dr James W. Alexander. First published posthumously in 1864, it contains sections from his private writings with their illuminating comments on the work of the ministry. Here too are his ‘Letters to Young Ministers’ on such themes as ‘Devotion to the Work of the Ministry’, ‘The Happiness of Christ’s Ministry’, ‘Extempore Preaching’, as well as papers on ‘Expository Preaching’, ‘Discipline and Study’, and related themes.

In an area of Christian literature already well endowed, Alexander’s work makes a particular contribution in a number of ways:
• Firstly, it stimulates thought as well as informs, and thus meets an important need in the preacher’s life.
• Secondly, it contains a variety of material and is therefore helpful to the novice and the experienced preacher alike.
• Thirdly, it instructs the mind and heart to see the preaching of the gospel as the most important and heroic task in the world, and one which demands the consecration of the whole man to God.

All who have a concern and responsibility for the preaching of the word of God should find something to help and encourage them in these pages.

A sincere desire to keep the Lord's Day holy can easily lead to a tick-box legalism, or guilty paralysis: 'Can I do X, Y, or Z on the Sabbath?'
Walter J. Chantry helps believers towards a maturity of judgement as they seek to honour God on the Sabbath

Walter J. Chantry helps Christians steer away from a legalistic approach to the Sabbath as they seek sincerely and joyfully to keep it holy.

Prayer is indispensable—it is the key ingredient in truly fruitful life and ministry. It is a confession that we are utterly dependent upon the Holy Spirit of God to accomplish anything for his glory and the furtherance of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week’s magazine episode looks at a group of nineteenth-century Scottish ministers who knew this to be the case to an extraordinary degree.

Do you call the Sabbath a delight?
A notable transformation has taken place in the way Christians approach the Lord’s Day. The effects of this have been disastrous — morally, socially, and spiritually.
Walt Chantry’s concern is show how and why the Lord’s Day is meant to be one of joy and blessing for God’s people. ‘Call the Sabbath a Delight’ is written with a deep pastoral concern, and its message is an important one for all Christians to carefully consider.

Brother Pastor,

Ministry is demanding work, and it can be easy to go months – or even years – without taking some time to ‘come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a little while’ (Mark 6:31 NASB).

The Banner of Truth West Coast Ministers’ Conference exists for that reason. We invite you to spend a few days with us at Mount Hermon to be taught, refreshed, and reminded that you are not labouring in vain, and you are not labouring alone.

We hope you will make plans to join us. Tag a friend in the comments who should know about this conference!

Prices increase after September 22. Learn more: https://ow.ly/R0z650ZGn2h
