St. John Capistrano, "Soldier Priest," Patron Saint of Military Chaplains...pray for us!

Saint John of Capistrano
1386-1456
Feast Day: October 23 (New), March 28 (Trad)
Patronage: Jurist, Military Chaplains
Saint John of Capistrano, a Franciscan friar, and Catholic priest, was born in Italy during turbulent times. He studied and practiced both secular and canon law and was appointed Governor of Perugia. When war broke out he was thrown in prison while working on a peaceful settlement and it was here he had his conversion. With St. James of the Marches, he entered the Franciscans and studied under St. Bernardine of Siena. Famous as a preacher, theologian, and inquisitor, John earned the nickname ’the Soldier Saint’ when he led a crusade to free Belgrade, which had been invaded. He survived the battle, but fell victim to the bubonic plaque on October 23, 1456.
Prints, plaques & holy cards available for purchase. Link in our bio.

Find out more about our newest Doctor of the Church, whose Feast Day is today, the day of his conversion.

Today is the feast of St. John Henry Newman (Oct 9) — the newest Doctor of the Church. St. John Henry Newman, pray for us!

“Lead, Kindly Light, Amid the Encircling Gloom” was written by John Henry Newman as a poem entitled "the Pillar of the Cloud,” which he published in the “British Magazine” in 1834; he was still in his early thirties, and not yet Catholic:

“Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom.
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home.
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see.
The distant scene—one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor pray'd that Thou
Shouldst lead me on.
I loved to choose and see my path, but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on,
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;
And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Father Peyton was perhaps the best-known "media priest" this side of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Unlike Archbishop Sheen, however, Father Peyton stayed mainly behind the scenes, hosting a nationally broadcast radio program for more than 22 years and produ...
