MaTT Club held its annual Christmas party last Sunday. Our theme was Candy Cane. I told the children that the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but it’s ok to have some fun too. They spun the candy cane to win a prize under the cup, tossed rings over a candy cane, and followed the story of Jesus’ birth to find 9 different colors of candy canes. After snacks the children made peppermint play dough and candy cane fingerprint ornaments. Our last craft was to measure each child then cut red and white ribbon the same length as their height. They pushed the ribbon inside a clear ball ornament and attached a poem. May everyone have a blessed Christmas and we’ll see you in January.

On November 16 MaTT Club ‘traveled’ to Madagascar. We started the evening with a game of tossing rings over the lemur’s tail. We talked about some unique animals in Madagascar and about different types of lemurs.

After that we had a ‘Taste of Madagascar’. My helpers and I cut several kinds of fruits, found in Madagascar, for the children to taste. They were quite excited to see and try Jackfruit. They loved seeing the sap seeping out. Unfortunately the fruit was not quite ripe and wasn’t as tasty as I had hoped. It certainly looked ripe from the outside!

Some others we tried were mango, persimmon, papaya, plantain (fresh and baked), coconut milk and lychee tea (because we couldn’t find fresh or canned). The children were all brave and tried several foods that were new to them.

After snacks we played a game in which some of the children tried to toss mosquitoes (ping pong balls) over the net while the others tried to move the net to prevent any from flying over. Some got sneaky and threw their balls under the bottom edge of the net!

After that I told them about missionaries Elizabeth and Dan Turk. Elizabeth was concerned about the number of deaths (especially in very young children) from mosquito born malaria. We met under a net to hear about her work in Madagascar. Bed nets are still used today and can be purchased on line.

Elizabeth’s husband Dan, focused on the destruction of trees in Madagascar. Over 75% of Madagascar’s native forests have been cut for fuel and to create grassland. When the trees are cut down, Madagascar loses much of its unique wildlife. Animals that are found nowhere else on earth! Like the lemur. Reforesting the land with eucalyptus and fruit trees enables the people to meet their need for fuel, foods and construction materials and also helps preserve Madagascar’s unique wildlife.
During craft time we made lemurs with very long tails.

If I’m repeating this I’m sorry. I posted the Bambamlika game and lost the paragraphs I had written.

On Nov 2 MaTT Club “traveled” to Ghana, Africa. Our friend Audrey came to share her experiences growing up in her home country of Ghana. We started the evening with some traditional Ghanese games. We jumped into and out of the circle to play “In the Pool/Out of the Pool”. Then we stood in a circle with one person in the middle to play “Bambamlika”. The person in the middle slowly spun around pointing to each person as we sang. At a certain point in the song she stopped and the friend she was pointing to did a dance with her and then traded spots so that friend is now in the middle. (Look for the video in another post). After that we played “Sansankroma” . In this game we each had a rock. Sitting in a circle on the floor, we passed our rock to the rhythm as a song was sung. If you ended up with more than one rock when the song ended you were out.

During Bible Exploration time Audrey told us about her home life, school experiences and church. We found out that in many ways children in Ghana and children in the United States are alike. After that we read a story of a woman from Ghana named Olivia. She helped homeless children find food, shelter and love. Olivia saved money from her small shop and used it to send as many children as she could to school. We discussed homelessness in Carbondale.

For craft time we made a paper version of Kente cloth.
