Pukaʻana Congregational Church

Pukaʻana Congregational Church Loving God & neighbor since 1849. Pukaʻana Congregational Church is a member of the wider United Church of Christ family.

Founded in 1849, we continue to be a community of faithful followers of Jesus committed to living out the gospel of love, peace, justice, and reconciliation, as we have for generations. For over 170 years, Pukaʻana remains a central part in the lives of many whose roots are in the South Kona community of Keālia and Hoʻokena. As we continue to grow and move into God's future, we seek to be a place where all are invited and all are welcome to experience sacredness, divinity, and community together.

Sometimes the preached Word keeps preaching.

Two weeks ago, our Kahu shared a sermon reminding us that we are both wretched and blessed: honest about our brokenness, yet confident in God’s unending love and grace. Those words didn’t stay in the pulpit. They found new life in music.

Our Kahu’s sister-in-law Joli Kiwaha prayerfully transformed the sermon into two original songs: “Wretched and Blessed” and “Grace Saves.” What a beautiful reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to inspire us in different ways, calling us to sing the good news as well as proclaim it.

May these songs encourage you to remember that God’s grace is always greater than our failures, and that in Christ we are deeply loved, deeply forgiven, and forever held.

Some mornings our minds are crowded with worry, fear, and distraction. But Romans 8 reminds us that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus, and that setting our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace.

This week’s sermon, “With Our Minds Stayed on Jesus,” shared by our Kahu, invites us to begin again by turning our hearts and minds toward Christ. In a world that constantly competes for our attention, God’s Spirit calls us away from fear and toward grace, hope, and peace.

May we wake each day with our minds stayed on Jesus.

Who says budget presentations have to be boring? 🎶

After rewriting You’ve Got a Friend for our 2025 HCUCC Annual Meeting on Kauaʻi, our Senior Kahu was invited back by Justice and Witness Team Chair Cheri Dennis to do it again. This year on Oʻahu, he took on his favorite Michael Jackson song, Human Nature, with brand-new lyrics to help present the work and budget of the Justice and Witness Missional Team, one of 4 teams tasked with creatively presenting their portion of the budget.

A little creativity, a lot of laughter, and a reminder that stewardship can be joyful. 🎤✨

We are currently working on securing a quote to rebuild the front wall. We have also applied for relief funding through the County of Hawaii which is available but which is not guaranteed as it will require their own assessment. This will be lengthy process and we thank the community for their patience and their kokua in helping to clean up some of the damage here and there. As more information becomes available we will update you.

This Sunday, we begin our summer sermon series, **Faith of Our Fathers: Summer with the Patriarchs.**

Our first message, **“God Hears,”** comes from Genesis 21:8–21 and the story of Hagar and Ishmael. Though this series follows the life of Abraham, we will also learn from the people whose lives were shaped by God’s promise to him.

In one of the Bible’s most heartbreaking stories, Hagar and Ishmael find themselves alone in the wilderness. The water runs out. Hope seems lost. Yet Scripture tells us that **God heard the voice of the boy.**

This week, Sr. Kahu will explore a simple but powerful truth:

**Faith means trusting that no one is disposable to God.**

God sees. God hears. God provides. And even in the wilderness, God remains faithful.

Join us as we worship, learn, and begin this journey through the lives of the patriarchs together.

Kūkulu Uapo: Building Bridges

This week, our church was represented at the 204th ʻAha Paeʻāina of the Hawaiʻi Conference UCC, graciously hosted by Waipahu UCC and neighboring West Oʻahu congregations.

Our youth delegate, Taven, arrived on Wednesday to join more than 40 youth from across the islands at Camp Mokulēʻia for the ʻAha Youth Program—a time of connection, faith-building, and shared ʻike.

Our Sr. Kahu joined on Thursday for the Annual Meeting of the State Council of Hawaiian Congregational Churches (SCHCC), marking the completion of his term as Secretary. Mahalo for this season of service and leadership.

Together, Taven and Kahu participated as our delegates in the ʻAha Makua beginning Thursday evening, engaging in worship, discernment, and the ongoing work of building bridges across our communities and islands.

We return home grateful—for relationships strengthened, for voices lifted, and for the Spirit moving among us.
