Led by Lay Leader Steve Hill, our church hosted a Sunday service on August 30 in the Outdoor Chapel, bringing together members of the Lighthouse Cooperative Parish -- Peoples UMC, Thornton Heights UMC, Evergreen UMC, and our church. Two members of the Evergreen church took the 8:15 ferry from Long Island for our 10 a.m. service. About 55 were in attendance.

Ida Santos, Kate and Paul Hansen provided music on a sound system provided by David Rogers. Bruce Lind and Linda Webster led prayers and scripture readings on a perfect late-summer morning beneath the tall trees, low-lying ferns and the soothing songs of birds and wisps of a gentle breeze.

Throughout the service, Steve offered three reflections for everyone to embrace and consider in silence, focusing on the forever wild areas of Maine, including our Chapel Woods, Earth's great treasures, where having good friends is one of God's most significant blessings, and silence amidst chaos, in which Steve reminded everyone to never forget the social principles of the United Methodist Church.

All gathered afterward for a brunch in Fellowship Hall.

It was a morning to worship together in one of the best surroundings of God's creation and appreciate the gifts we all have been given.

At a memorial service on August 29 that filled our sanctuary, New England Conference Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton used the phrase during his eulogy, "Behind every great man there's a great woman". There could not have been a better remembrance for honoring Jane Petherbridge Ives, wife of Bishop Cliff Ives, who passed away on July 26 at age 87.

As was written in her obituary, "Jane was a beloved wife for 68 years, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator and author. Jane's remarkable abilities listening, coaching and helping others be who God created them to be, impacted all blessed to know her. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, students she inspired, couples she encouraged, ministries she supported and countless lives she touched. Though we deeply miss her, we rejoice in the enduring promise of resurrection and give thanks for a life beautifully and faithfully lived."

Throughout the service, those sentiments were lovingly expressed by Jane and Cliff's daughter Bonnie, and son's Stephen and Jonathan. Her years as an educator were remembered by longtime friend Mary Ellen Schaper and in a poem read by granddaughter Amber Grace Collins-Ives.

In addition to Bishop Bickerton, the service was attended by bishops and clergy from around the country including Alfred Johnson (retired bishop from the New Jersey Episcopal Conference), Minerva Carcano (retired bishop from the San Francisco area}, and Ann Sherer-Simpson (retired bishop from the Nebraska area).

After CEUMC Lay Leader Steve Hill welcomed the gathering, a procession of bishops and clergy into the sanctuary was led by granddaughters Dorothy and Bethany Ives, holding a candlelighter and the memorial box holding Jane's ashes.

Gail Parker played both the organ and piano throughout the service and special music, including the "Ashokan Farewell", was performed by celloist Danny Rand from the Southern Maine and Midcoast symphonies.

A reception was held in Fellowship Hall following the service with food prepared by our United Women in Faith. The family then traveled to Hallowell, Maine, for prayer and reflections at the Cox Memorial United Methodist Church, followed by a graveside committal service at Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta.

A special thank you to Steve and Judith Hill for working closely with the family to prepare every detail for the service, to Rich Hughen for coordinating the order of service and the AV and Zoom with Dom, to Linda Greer and Jeff Ward for arranging transportation for out-of-town guests, to Jim Tammaro and Rod Frey for coordinating parking, to Judith Hill and Jean Meyer for coordinating the reception, and to many others for behind-the-scenes contributions.

Also thank you to Hobbs Funeral Home for working with our church to make this a well-orchestrated celebration of the life of Jane Ives.

Our church will host a combined service for the Lighthouse congregations this Sunday, August 30, in the outdoor chapel at 10 a.m. Please come and join in worship with members of the Peoples and Thornton Heights UMCs.

A memorial service will be held at our church this Saturday, August 29 at 10 a.m. for Jane Ives, the wife of Bishop Cliff Ives for 68 years. Cliff and Jane first arrived at our church in 1962 (picture) when Cliff was appointed to be our minister while still a student at the Boston University School of Theology.

Cliff and Jane were with us until 1968, during which time plans were developed to build our current church.

Jane passed away on July 26 at the age of 87.

Visitation will be held at Hobbs Funeral Home on Friday, August 28 from 4-7 p.m., 230 Cottage Road in South Portland.

For Saturday's memorial service, we are expecting many guests. For members of our congregation who plan to attend, if possible, please park at the Cape Town Hall and walk the two-tenths of a mile back to the church. Our parking lot will be filled.

Thank you to Bruce and Sue, Steve, Clyde, Rod, Carol, and Bob for spending Saturday morning on July 25, spreading wood chips and helping to clean up the outdoor chapel! It looks great in preparation for three events in August -- a gathering for Family Promise adults and children, a combined Sunday service for the Lighthouse Churches, and a wedding.

Take some time to visit the chapel, sit for a while, and enjoy the peace and comfort of nature and God's creation.

Please help to keep our church's Pet Blessing Box filled with dog and cat food. The box is on the kiosk at the entrance to Chapel Woods at the end of the church parking lot.

The box is currently almost empty.

The plan for the box is to provide treats for dogs walking the trail with their owners, but also for owners who don't always have the means to provide their dogs and cats with good food.

If you are able, please donate dog and/or cat food and treats for the Blessing Box and either place it directly in the box or leave it in the church on the bench near the front entrance to Fellowship Hall.

If you are available, please consider helping out with spreading wood chips in the outdoor chapel and doing a general cleanup on Saturday, July 25. There are three events scheduled for the chapel in August and we want to make it looking the best it can be -- a walk/lunch for Family Promise, a combined service for the Lighthouse Churches, and a wedding.

If possible, bring shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, pruning sheers, and weedwackers.

We will start at 9 a.m. and go until 11 or so. Join in when you can.

On Sunday, July 19, our church welcomed back Rev. Dr. Steven Notis to be a guest preacher at the 10 a.m. service. He served as our minister from 1992-2001. He currently is retired but serving as Associate Clergy at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

The Rev. Notis opened his sermon by remembering his fond times in Cape with his boys playing in the woods by the parsonage.

He said after retiring, he left the church for a while, but after a visit with one of his sons back to our woods, he returned to the church.

During his sermon, he referred to the parable of an enemy sowing weeds among the wheat that had been planted and explained that the wheat and weeds learned to co-exist. He said we must learn to do the same.
