Pope Francis, in his Message for the World Day of Social Communications, offers a beautiful and poignant reflection on both the promise and the hazards of social media and networks in today's society.
"We need to recognize how social networks, on the one hand, help us to better connect, rediscover, and assist one another, but on the other, lend themselves to the manipulation of personal data, aimed at obtaining political or economic advantages, without due respect for the person and his or her rights. . . .
From an anthropological point of view, the metaphor of the net recalls another meaningful image: the community. A community is that much stronger if it is cohesive and supportive, if it is animated by feelings of trust, and pursues common objectives. The community as a network of solidarity requires mutual listening and dialogue, based on the responsible use of language."

This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of giving back to communication a broad perspective, based on the person, and stresses the value of ...

Today is the first day of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25). The observance began in 1908. This year's theme is a verse from the Book of Deuteronomy - "Justice, only justice, you shall pursue" (Dt 16:20).

Too often, we Christians tend to focus so much on prayer and worship that we can tend to ignore the biblical command for us to be instruments of God's justice for the poor and the marginalized. That was clearly a major aspect of Jesus' public ministry, yet we somehow make believing in Christ, rather than following and imitating Christ, our priority. But as the Body of Christ present and active in the world today, we - baptized Christians of all types - ought to be striving to be and to do what Jesus was and did... to be those who "bring good news to the poor . . . release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind . . . [and who] let the oppressed go free" (Lk 4:18-19).

God of the widow, the orphan and the stranger,
you have shown us the path of justice.
Help us to follow your way
by doing justice as our worship of you.
As Christians together,
may we worship you not only with our hearts and minds,
but also by our deeds.
May the Holy Spirit help and guide us
to work for justice wherever we are,
so that many people may be strengthened
through our works.
We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
