5-Day Devotional: Encounters with the Risen Christ
Day 1: God Honors the Overlooked
Reading: Mark 16:1-11; John 20:11-18
Devotional: Mary Magdalene, a woman with a troubled past, became the first witness of the resurrected Christ. In a culture that dismissed women's testimony, Jesus chose her to carry the greatest news in human history. This reveals God's heart—He elevates what the world dismisses and honors faithful devotion over social standing. Mary's tears of grief transformed into joy when she heard Jesus speak her name. Consider how God sees you not through your past failures but through your present faithfulness. He knows your name and meets you personally in your moments of deepest sorrow. Who in your life needs to hear that God sees them, values them, and has chosen them for His purposes?
Day 2: The Ministry of Restoration
Reading: Luke 24:33-34; 1 Corinthians 15:5
Devotional: Between Peter's bitter denial and his bold Pentecost sermon stands a private encounter with Jesus that Scripture barely mentions but profoundly impacted Peter's life. After cursing and swearing he didn't know Christ, Peter received a personal visit from the risen Savior. God uses broken things and broken people. Your greatest failure doesn't disqualify you from God's service—it often becomes the foundation for deeper ministry. Jesus didn't shame Peter; He restored him privately before recommissioning him publicly. What broken pieces of your life need Christ's restorative touch? Remember, God's grace meets you in your failure and transforms it into future faithfulness. His love pursues you even when you've walked away.
Day 3: Opening Blind Eyes
Reading: Luke 24:13-35
Devotional: Two discouraged disciples walked seven miles with Jesus but didn't recognize Him until He broke bread with them. Sometimes our grief, disappointment, or confusion blinds us to Christ's presence in our circumstances. Jesus asked them questions He already knew the answers to, drawing out their doubts and fears. Then He opened the Scriptures, revealing Himself throughout the Old Testament. Notice that Jesus used God's Word to minister comfort and understanding. When you're walking through confusion, immerse yourself in Scripture—it's there you'll recognize Christ's presence. The Word of God is your primary tool for encouragement, both for yourself and others. What situation in your life needs the illuminating power of Scripture today? Jesus is walking beside you even when you don't recognize Him.
Day 4: Believing Without Seeing
Reading: John 20:24-29
Devotional: Thomas demanded physical proof before believing in the resurrection. Jesus graciously provided evidence but gently corrected his perspective: "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." Faith isn't the absence of questions—it's trusting God despite them. Thomas's honest doubt led to the profound declaration, "My Lord and my God!" Your struggles with faith don't disqualify you; they're often the pathway to deeper conviction. Jesus meets you in your skepticism with patience and truth. Biblical faith means believing God's promises when circumstances suggest otherwise, trusting His character when you cannot trace His hand. What area of unbelief are you holding onto, demanding proof before surrender? Jesus invites you to believe and experience the blessing that comes from trusting Him without needing all the answers.
Day 5: Recommissioned for Purpose
Reading: John 21:1-19
Devotional: Peter returned to his nets, abandoning his calling to follow Christ. Six disciples followed him back to their old life. But Jesus met them there, filled their nets, and recommissioned them—not as "fishers of men" but as shepherds who would "feed my sheep." Sometimes we retreat to familiar territory when ministry becomes difficult, but Christ pursues us with new assignments. He doesn't shame us for our retreat; He reminds us of His power and renews our calling. Notice Jesus asked Peter three times, "Do you love me?"—once for each denial, offering complete restoration. Your past failures don't define your future usefulness. Christ has work specifically designed for you. What "nets" have you returned to instead of pursuing God's calling? Jesus stands on the shore of your life, calling you back to purposeful service.
These resurrection appearances transformed defeated followers into bold witnesses. May these encounters with the risen Christ transform your faith, restore your hope, and recommission your life for His glory.
