The railroad that runs in front of the church was completed in 1860. It was called the Alabama and Florida Railroad and ran to Montgomery, Alabama. When Confederate forces evacuated Pensacola in May 1862, the track was taken up all the way to Pollard, Alabama to prevent Federal forces from using it to threaten Mobile or Montgomery. It was finally rebuilt in 1868 and played a major part in the development of this community. The track there today is in the same location as the original, though it has been repaired and replaced many times.

Each Memorial Day weekend, Diane and I place flags in the church cemetery, on the graves of Private Solon Mitchell, Florida Volunteers and 2nd Lieutenant James G. Connor, U.S. Army.
Mitchell died of disease contracted state side during the Spanish American War. He never made it to Cuba. He was the son of Helen Tate Mitchell, the sister of Professor James M. Tate.
Connor was killed in action on April 23, 1945 while serving as an aerial artillery spotter in Germany. The war with Germany ended two weeks later. Initially buried in Germany, his remains were later shipped home, and he was buried with full military honors, on June 1, 1949. His mother was a member of the Mackey family who were very active in the church for several generations. You will have to click on Connor's image to get the full view.

The pond near the Scout Hut is all that remains of a clay pit and brickyard dating to the early 1800's. In 1829, when construction began on Ft. Pickens, Major William Chase advertised specifications for the brick he required, purchasing from anyone who could supply them. As a result, brickmaking became the first major industry in this area, with James Gonzalez supplying the most. The original owner of our brickyard is unknown, but it may have belonged to A.W. Nicholson and James B. Roberts at one time. Brick were transported by ox cart down the Lower Bluff Road (Old Chemstrand) to the Escambia River, where they were taken by barge to Santa Rosa Island. Chase paid $9.00 per thousand for the brick and it required 21,500,000 alone to build Fort Pickens! Bricks from the Gonzalez area were also used to build Forts McRee., Barrancas(pictured)and Barrancas Redoubt.

This Pensacola News Journal article documents the formation of the Gonzalez Methodist Men's Club. Dad was always very proud of this. In the early 60's, he proposed that they sponsor Boy Scout Troop 628. It was unanimously approved. Member Max Turner became the first Scoutmaster and Dad became the first Assistant Scoutmaster. Dad continued under Don Barker and Bo Sharpless.
