Yesterday's pet blessing on the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi had the additional blessing of beautiful weather. Only dogs and cats were in attendance this year (plus their humans). With Saint Francis, may we always invite the creatures of God's creation to join us in praising him, and may we care for them, remembering that the Lord put humans into the garden "to work it and keep it" (Genesis 2:15).

Saint Francis' Feast Day, October 4th, has become the primary occasion for modern animal blessings, shifting the focus toward thanking God for companionship and all of creation.

Reverend Brian C. Smith will offer a blessing for all pets on October 4, 2026 at 5:00 PM in the Basilica Parking Lot.

Tomorrow, August 29, Mass will be offered at 8:00 a.m. in the Basilica of St. John the Baptist for the memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist. It is one of the many days our patron saints are commemorated throughout the year. This culminating event in St. John's life recalls the value and the cost of standing up for the truth.

By the way, the images in these reliefs found in St. John's Hall are taken from the Gospel for the day, which will be proclaimed at Mass.

At the 10:30 Mass last Sunday, Bennet received new life in Christ in the sacrament of Baptism! He and his family are members of St. James Church in the Lakewood Catholic Parishes, but they have multi-generational roots in Canton, which brought them back to St. Peter's Church for this special occasion. May he always walk as a child of the light that is Christ!

Today the Church grew stronger as Gabriel received his first Holy Communion at this morning's Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the true Ark of the Covenant, who held the Son of God in her womb, and who is now glorified with him in heaven. Every time we receive Our Lord in Holy Communion, we are given the privilege to also be filled with his presence.

Have you ever noticed the window of the Ark of the Covenant that Gabriel and Fr. Smith are looking at during today's homily? Next time you're in the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, try to find it!

Tomorrow, August 15, is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our parish will celebrate with Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, followed by a light breakfast with the blessing of herbs in St. John's Hall.

Don't forget to bring fresh herbs from your garden! This lonely piece of parsley from the rectory garden will be making an appearance.

Also, please note that the Vigil Mass in the CCHS Grotto this evening is at 5:00 p.m., which is earlier than was published in last Sunday's bulletin.

As the Church celebrates St. Dominic today on August 8, we remember how he promoted the praying of the rosary, and our parish gives thanks that the windows of the mysteries of the rosary in the Basilica of St. John the Baptist are once again complete!

Radiant Arts, Inc., out of Beach City made great time and has done a splendid job in restoring the windows. Here are a few glimpses of the restoration process from their studio and of the windows as they look back in the Basilica.

It was a beautiful afternoon for our parish picnic last Sunday. Not only because the weather cooperated, but because we had fantastic food and ice cream to enjoy, and most especially because of the healthy turnout and fellowship. Thank you to everyone who made it happen! May God always be praised in our unity and in our support for one another.
