What are you doing Wednesday night?

This Wednesday, August 19, we begin a brand-new journey through The Four Gospels—a multi-year, verse-by-verse study of the life, ministry, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Our Wednesday Night Bible Study has already worked verse-by-verse through all but six books of the New Testament. Now we’re turning our attention to the heart of the story, beginning with the Gospel of Mark.

Whether you’ve studied the Gospels many times or are ready to dig into them seriously for the first time, come grow in your knowledge of Scripture, understanding of Jesus, and love for Him.

WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE
5:30 PM — Churchwide Prayer in the Sanctuary
5:30 PM — AWANA & Youth Activities begin
6:05 PM — The Four Gospels Bible Study begins

The 6:05 start gives those participating in prayer time, which concludes at 6:00, a few minutes to make it to class without missing anything.

Children: AWANA for ages 2 through 5th grade, with nursery available for younger children
Youth: Grades 6–12

Bring your Bible and join us as we begin with Mark 1 this Wednesday night.

The Four Gospels: One Christ. Four Witnesses.

Proverbs 6

Committed to Growing in the Lord
“My son, keep your father’s command and do not despise
your mother’s teaching.
Proverbs 6:20

Several subjects of great wisdom are addressed in Proverbs 6. We will look at a few today and a few tomorrow in a rather lengthy chapter. Solomon begins by advising his son to stay away from co-signing documents for others to use our credit on our good name. When we follow the Lord’s advice, life will always go smoother and the challenges of life will be minimized. Verses 6-11 are great lessons, teaching us the importance of working and saving each day. Today, I want to focus on verses 16-19 because it teaches us the things our Heavenly Father absolutely does not like to see in His children.

Years ago, as a teenager my life was centered around me. I wish it would have stopped in my teenage years, but it seemed to carry on past those years of adolescence. As I grew and matured in life, I noticed my relationship with my father changing. As a young man, I thought dad was there to provide for me. It was always, “Dad, do you have $20.00, or dad can I borrow the car, or dad can I have, have, have…?” In those years I had no understanding what it meant to have a loving relationship because the focus was always on me. As years passed, I found myself more focused on dad and mom. It was not what they could do for me, but could I do for them.

The same is true in our relationship with Christ. If our heavenly relationship is based on what we can get out of God, our relationship will always be strained. It is when, based on His love for us, we begin living to serve our heavenly Father. As a result, we find our time with the Lord meaningful and filled with purpose. As we grow in Christ, our focus in our relationship with God becomes, “what can I do to please and honor Him in all things. Chapter six includes things God detests. As we love him more and more, we want to do all we can to please Him.

Things That Break Our Father’s Heart
1. Haughty eyes
2. A Lying Tongue
3. Hands that shed innocent blood
4. A Heart that devises wicked schemes
5. Feet that rush into evil
6. A false witness
7. Someone who stirs up dissension among brothers

Until tomorrow, as we grow in Christ, we care more about what we can do for God, rather than what He can do for us.

Proverbs 5

Our One for Life

From time to time I am asked, “Where does the Bible say we are to be committed to one person for life?” Today’s scripture speaks clearly, guiding us in the pathway way of blessing regarding marriage. Few earthly relationships are more beautiful than marriage. To meet two people who have shared thirty, forty, fifty, years together, reflects a beauty that can only be experienced. Couples who remain together for a lifetime have endured many heartaches and overcome tremendous obstacles as they have walked through life, committed to one another for life.

Solomon knew the gravity and traps the enemy would set before for his son and the devastation that would stem from s*xual immorality. Our current culture exploits s*x on seemingly every level of life. What appears acceptable culturally, leaves potential scars and emotional challenges, challenging God’s children to enjoy “One for Life.” Yet, when we when embrace God’s plan and heed the warnings God through Solomon provides in Proverbs 5:15-20 days of great joy become ours to be shared.

“Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.
Should your springs overflow into the streets, your streams of water in public squares?
Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.
May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in
the wife of your youth… Why be captivated my son
by an adulteress?”

The idea of one man and one woman remaining faithful to each other for a lifetime seems out of touch. Yet, God reminds us, this core value is a wise standard and decision of great blessing.
Sexual fulfillment is a powerful and fulfilling blessing God has established with significant boundaries to enjoy. May we seek wisdom and strength from the Lord in this area of our lives. Whatever we face today, may we intentionally strive to be prepared spiritually, emotionally, and physically to experience God’s best. Temptations will come, opportunities will present themselves leading us to follow enticing steps that can prove devastating. God’s word and his plan is simply the greater plan.

Until tomorrow, the person we currently call our spouse can meet every need and dream we have for marriage. Regardless of our yesterday’s, let us begin where we are right now, making a commitment to call the one we call our spouse, our one for life.
