Message: “The Call of God”
Text: Gen 12:1, Gen 11:31
The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father's family, and go to the land that I will show you.
1Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you; 2And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;…
Here begins the story of Abram, We here read of Abram's departure out of Ur of the Chaldees, with his father Terah, his nephew Lot, and the rest of his family, in obedience to the call of God.
This chapter leaves them about mid-way between Ur and Canaan, where they dwelt till Terah's death. Many reach to Charran, and yet fall short of Canaan; they are not far from the kingdom of God, and yet never come thither.
Commentary: God made choice of Abram, and singled him out from among his fellow-idolaters! Jews, Christians and Moslems all lay claim to the patriarch Abram, Abraham "the first convert" but God chose and called him that he might reserve a people for himself, among whom his true worship might be maintained till the coming of Christ.
Abram was tried whether he loved God better than all, and whether he could willingly leave all to go with God.
Mt 10:37; "If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine
Mt 12:48; Jesus asked, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" But those who do the will of God
Lk 14:26; "If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison--your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.
His kindred and his father's house were a constant temptation to him, he could not continue among them without danger of being infected by them.
The command God gave to Abram, speaks to the natural affection must give way to Divine grace. Sin, and all the occasions of it, must be forsaken; particularly bad company. Your feelings are real and the pain is present but it’s not more important than the Purpose!
Abram’s OBEDIENT response to the call of God would be accompanied by the promises of God!
I will make of thee a great nation. When God took Abram from his own people, he PROMISED to make him the head of another people.
I will bless thee. Obedient believers shall be sure to inherit the blessing.
DEUT 28:1, If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
3. I will make thy name great. The name of obedient believers shall certainly be made great.
Ph 2:7, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,…
4. Thou shalt be a blessing. Good men are the blessings of their country.
5. I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee. God will take care that none are losers, by any service done for his people.
In thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Jesus Christ is the great blessing of the world, the greatest that ever the world possessed.
All the true blessedness that the world is now, or ever shall be possessed of, is owing back to Abram and his posterity.
We must understand that there is always a blessing that is connected to the walk and life of Obedience! God is a rewarder of those who dilligently seek him!
Gen 17:5, "No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
Abram's name means "Exalted Father", which may have proven to be an embarrassment as he aged without children. This fits with God's promise, but he didn't receive that name from his father.
God gives him the name "Abraham", which means "father of many" because it was reflective of God's promise to Abram that he would not only have a son, but also that he would be the father of many nations. His name changed when he changed, and when he responded to God’s will, God released his promises!
Through Abraham we have a Bible, a Saviour, and a gospel. They are the stock on which the Christian church is grafted.
Heb 11:8, It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.
Closing: True Faith is married to True Obedience not True Religion!
