Message: “The Call of God”
Text: Gen 12:1, Gen 11:31
The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father's family, and go to the land that I will show you.
1Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you; 2And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;…
Here begins the story of Abram, We here read of Abram's departure out of Ur of the Chaldees, with his father Terah, his nephew Lot, and the rest of his family, in obedience to the call of God.
This chapter leaves them about mid-way between Ur and Canaan, where they dwelt till Terah's death. Many reach to Charran, and yet fall short of Canaan; they are not far from the kingdom of God, and yet never come thither.
Commentary: God made choice of Abram, and singled him out from among his fellow-idolaters! Jews, Christians and Moslems all lay claim to the patriarch Abram, Abraham "the first convert" but God chose and called him that he might reserve a people for himself, among whom his true worship might be maintained till the coming of Christ.
Abram was tried whether he loved God better than all, and whether he could willingly leave all to go with God.
Mt 10:37; "If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine
Mt 12:48; Jesus asked, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" But those who do the will of God
Lk 14:26; "If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison--your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.
His kindred and his father's house were a constant temptation to him, he could not continue among them without danger of being infected by them.
The command God gave to Abram, speaks to the natural affection must give way to Divine grace. Sin, and all the occasions of it, must be forsaken; particularly bad company. Your feelings are real and the pain is present but it’s not more important than the Purpose!
Abram’s OBEDIENT response to the call of God would be accompanied by the promises of God!
I will make of thee a great nation. When God took Abram from his own people, he PROMISED to make him the head of another people.
I will bless thee. Obedient believers shall be sure to inherit the blessing.
DEUT 28:1, If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
3. I will make thy name great. The name of obedient believers shall certainly be made great.
Ph 2:7, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,…
4. Thou shalt be a blessing. Good men are the blessings of their country.
5. I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee. God will take care that none are losers, by any service done for his people.
In thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Jesus Christ is the great blessing of the world, the greatest that ever the world possessed.
All the true blessedness that the world is now, or ever shall be possessed of, is owing back to Abram and his posterity.
We must understand that there is always a blessing that is connected to the walk and life of Obedience! God is a rewarder of those who dilligently seek him!
Gen 17:5, "No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
Abram's name means "Exalted Father", which may have proven to be an embarrassment as he aged without children. This fits with God's promise, but he didn't receive that name from his father.
God gives him the name "Abraham", which means "father of many" because it was reflective of God's promise to Abram that he would not only have a son, but also that he would be the father of many nations. His name changed when he changed, and when he responded to God’s will, God released his promises!
Through Abraham we have a Bible, a Saviour, and a gospel. They are the stock on which the Christian church is grafted.
Heb 11:8, It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.
Closing: True Faith is married to True Obedience not True Religion!

Message: “Knowing the Source”
Text: Jn 15:4

Commentary: If you take the time to look at the most amazing lake, stream or river, behind all of the power, force and flow of water, there is a source for this flow!

If you look at the life of a amazing believer, you will see a force and flow that is present in their lives, today we must understand and track down the Source, the place of origin!

Jn 15:1; “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you.

As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

15:1-8 Jesus Christ is the Vine, the true Vine. He represents the union of human and Divine natures, and the fulness of the Spirit that is in him, and it is made fruitful by the moisture from a rich soil that would be God.

Believers are branches of this Vine. The root is unseen, and our life is hid with Christ; the root bears the tree, diffuses sap to it, and in Christ are all supports and supplies.
The branches of the vine are many, yet, meeting in the root, are all but one vine; all true Christians, meet in Christ.

Believers, like the branches of the vine, are weak, and unable to stand but they are easily often broken!

The Father is the Husbandman/Gardener. Never was any husbandman so wise, so watchful, about his vineyard, as God is about his church, which therefore must prosper.
We must be fruitful. From a vine we look for grapes, and from a Christian we look for love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

We must honor God, and do good; this is bearing fruit. The unfruitful are taken away. And even fruitful branches need pruning; for even the best branches could be better.

The word of Christ is spoken to all believers; and there is a cleansing virtue in that word, as it works grace, it works out corruption. And the more fruit we bring forth, the more we abound in what is good, the more our Lord is glorified. In order to produce fruit, we must abide in Christ, must have union with him by faith.

It is the great concern of all Christ's disciples, constantly to keep up dependence upon Christ, and communion with him.

True Christians find by experience, that any interruption in the exercise of their faith, causes holy affections to decline, their corruptions to revive, and their comforts to droop.

Closing: Those who abide not in Christ, though they may flourish for awhile in the outward, yet come to nothing. Those who remain in Christ have so many promises connected to their lives because of the relationship they have with the Vine. Let it flow!

The fire is the fittest place for withered branches; they are good for nothing else. Let us seek to live more simply on the fulness of Christ, and to grow more fruitful in every good word and work, so may our joy in Him and in his salvation be full.

Mt 3:10, The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

We must know that Jesus Christ is the Source of All of our Power and without him we can do nothing!

This world is full of darkness, deceit, corruption, abuse, greed and manipulation just to name a few things. We live in a place and time where wrong has become right and right has become wrong!

As a Christian I discovered that we are to make it through this maze called life, by following the direction of the Holy Spirit, it is he that will guide us through the minefields and traps that have been laid before us. Truth be told, this world didn’t like Jesus and he told us that the world won’t like us either. But he gave us a tool that is a gift, a weapon and a great resource! He gave us favor!

To favor means to give special regard to; to treat with goodwill; to show exceptional kindness to someone. Sometimes, it means to show extra kindness in comparison to the treatment of others; that is, preferential treatment.

Is 66:2 says, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.”

2 Chron16:9, says, “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong on behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”

To be “perfect” toward Him means we seek His favor more than we seek the favor of anyone else, even ourselves.

Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen.

Wisdom Bestows Well-Being
Proverbs 3:

1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Morning Devotion: The missing link
October 17, 2014 by morningdevotion
When a family member or dear friend is having a hard time, we typically find the time to pray for him or her.

Why? Because we love him or her, we want the situation to improve, we know that God has the ability to bring about changes and provide inner strength so desperately needed.

But what about when hard times are faced by people we barely know? By people we perhaps wish we didn’t know?

Intercessory prayer is not to be a matter of nurturing a buddy list.

It is, instead, to be a matter of seeking God’s intervention into the lives of those around us in order for them to experience better lives.

Even more, prayer is the opportunity for us to thank God for all the people in our lives, not just our family and friends.

This is not my invented philosophy. This is the command of God.

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.” (I Timothy 2:1)

The Apostle Paul had plenty of people who hated him and wanted him dead.

He had even more people who didn’t like him and didn’t care if anything good happened to him.

Yet, Paul prayed for God to help them all. He prayed that pagan government employees would sense God’s leading and do the right things to protect society.

I’m sure that he thanked God for the opportunity to display his faith in ways that helped others and glorified God.

And so should we.

Let’s make sure that everybody in our corner of the world — yes, even that person who doesn’t like us — is lifted up in positive, intercessory prayer. Let’s ask God to help them.

And even if we have to tell our prideful nature to “Cease, be still,” let’s give thanks for those who give us grief.

One other thing….

This isn’t to happen only when we feel like it.

This is to be job #1, Paul said.

Wow.

I’d better get to praying…..
