Laboring, Resting, and Remembering Who Is Lord

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’” Mark 2:27–28

Labor Day is often celebrated with cookouts, family gatherings, the end of summer, and, perhaps most importantly, a day off from work. It is a day set aside to recognize the value and contribution of labor. And that is worth celebrating.

From the very beginning, work was part of God’s design. Before sin entered the world, God placed Adam in the garden “to work it and take care of it” Genesis 2:15. Work itself was never the curse. Work was a gift, a way for humanity to participate in God’s creative purposes. But after the fall, work became harder. The ground resisted. Sweat entered the story. Toil became tangled with frustration, exhaustion, ambition, and sometimes even identity. And thousands of years later, we are still tempted to believe that what we do determines who we are.

We measure ourselves by our productivity. Our accomplishments. Our titles. Our income. Our full calendars. Our ability to keep going. We live in a world that often celebrates exhaustion as evidence of our importance. We wear busyness like a badge of honor.

But then Jesus speaks.
“The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus reminds us that we were not created merely to work. We were created to worship. We were not designed merely to produce. We were designed to abide. We were not created to prove our worth constantly. Our worth was given to us by the One who created us.

When God gave His people the Sabbath, He was giving them more than a day off. He was giving them a declaration of freedom. Jesus did not come to abolish the gift of Sabbath. He came to reveal its true purpose. The Pharisees had turned Sabbath into another burden, a list of rules and regulations to perform correctly. But Jesus reminded them that Sabbath was created as a gift. “The Sabbath was made for man.” Rest is not something we earn after working hard enough. Rest is a gift from God.

Jesus Himself modeled rhythms of work and rest. He ministered to crowds, healed the sick, taught His disciples, and carried the weight of humanity’s brokenness. Yet He also withdrew to solitary places to pray. He rested. He stopped. He spent time with the Father.

The Sabbath reminds us that not every moment must be filled with activity. Some moments are meant to be received. To breathe. To pray. To worship. To sit around a table. To enjoy creation. To laugh. To nap. To remember.

Labor Day invites us to honor the dignity of work. The Sabbath invites us to remember the dignity of rest. And Jesus invites us to surrender both to Him. He is not simply the Lord of Sunday mornings. He is Lord of Monday morning meetings. Lord of the classroom. Lord of the construction site. Lord of the hospital. Lord of the office. Lord of the kitchen. Lord of retirement. Lord of our labor. And Lord of our rest.

The question is not simply, “Am I working too hard?” Perhaps the deeper question is: “Who is Lord over my work?” When Jesus is Lord, our work becomes worship rather than merely striving. And when Jesus is Lord, our rest becomes an act of trust. We work faithfully because our labor matters to God. But we rest faithfully because God does not need us to keep the world spinning. That is His job. God invites us to rest in the confidence that even when we don’t see it, God is in control and working in ways our human minds could never imagine. What a powerful thought to rest in today!
