A Lot Going On, A Lot to Think About

A Lot Going On at East Canton Church
June 7, the church will gather morning and evening. These are public meetings; you are invited. At 10:00, there will be Bible Study for Adults (including Young People), led by pastor's wife Dedi Hannah, in Fellowship Hall. Dedi is teaching from Genesis. Simultaneously, there will be Children's Sunday School, led by Jeremy Chambers, in the Sanctuary. At 11:00 and 6:00, there will be Worship, led by Interim Pastor Daryl Hannah, in the Sanctuary.

June 12th, 3:00, the men will meet in the church parking lot to car pool to near Boone for a one-evening Men's Retreat. They will be back at midnight. There will be fellowship, and worship. If you'd like to go, be in the parking lot Friday afternoon.

A Lot to Think About Regarding the Bible and Messages
Our church desires to help Christians engage deeply with taught Scripture and preached Word. The Reformers reminded us Scripture, read, taught, and preached in public Bible Studies and Worship Services, is the ordinary means by which God builds faith in His people.

We encourage those who attend our Bible Studies and Worship Services to bring pen and paper to take notes. This week, we encourage attendees to note the Scriptures used, the Main Idea, What Sin is Exposed, an Application, and an Outline of each message. Before the day is over, we post links to a transcript and a summary of each message.

Since it is better to remember what is taught and preached than to forget, on Sunday evenings we encourage doing a 2-minute no-notes review of each message. Also, select one verse to meditate on through the week. Monday, we encourage re-reading the transcripts and summaries. Tuesday, we review our notes and highlight the Main Idea of each message. Wednesday at 6:30, we gather in Fellowship Hall to discuss our notes. Friday, we encourage re-reading the Scriptures behind each message.

How Much Is Too Much?

East Canton uses the YouVersion Bible app and the Velora app. We have set before us a host of digital options for our devotional lives. There are some priorities in deciding what and how much to select from both apps.

1st, we recognize that everything must be Bible based.
2nd, we recognize that while devotions written for a general Christian audience are good, the messages God has inspired our East Canton preachers and Bible teachers to present represent what God wants to say to our congregation.
3rd, praise and prayer are vital.
4th, the Holy Spirit is inside each of us who have placed our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior; He will fine tune the directions for each of us as individual members of the congregation.

As the capabilities of Velora progress, we have at our fingertips sermon and Bible study transcripts, lists of the verses from each message, and a summary of each message. Soon we will have personalized daily verses, personalized devotionals, quizzes, small group guides, and more—all from the messages delivered at our church to our congregation.

Starting this week, we are suggesting that on Sundays you not only do 2-minute no-notes reviews of each message and select a verse on which to meditate for the coming week but also read the summary of each message.
Then on Mondays, read the transcript of each message.
Tuesdays, review the notes you took on each message and either underline or highlight the Main Idea of each message.
Wednesday night, we share our insights from the messages with each other.
Fridays, re-read the Scriptures associated with each message.

When you combine all this with the YouVersion Bible app devotionals and guided prayers, it can be an awful lot. The writer of this post has had to slightly reduce what he does. If you are in a similar situation, pray and let the Holy Spirit guide you with how to adjust what you do.

Our church anticipates that God will speak to us individually and also collectively through these messages. Taking notes helps to capture what God is saying to us in particular. Reviewing those notes several times during the week helps us to not forget what God has said to us. It also makes it more likely we will actually do something about what He said to us.

There are two Bible apps that are part of what God has been teaching our church the last few months. One is YouVersion, an app for Bible reading and devotions. The other is Velora, which helps us keep the messages God has delivered to our particular congregation by our own Bible teachers and preachers central in our weekly personal discipleship focus.

Velora has just released a short video explaining what it is about. You are invited to watch the video and pray whether the Lord would have you join the Beta testing of this app.
