Canton Presbyterian Church

Canton Presbyterian Church An inclusive & loving congregation of the PCUSA, sharing the good news of God's love in Jesus Christ. Join us on Sundays for Faith Development at 9:30 a.m.

and worship at 11 a.m. Services are on Facebook Live every Sunday, and bulletins are posted on our website. Our purpose statement:
People have told us that our church is unusual. We don’t all agree on everything, except for the one important thing: following Jesus. This brings us together in a brave space that is unlike anything else out there. Our beliefs, understanding of scripture, and leaders

hip lead us to anti-racism work and LGBTQIA+ advocacy. At the same time, our membership is full of people across the political spectrum. In our differences, we value human diversity and rights. Our differences create deep friendships, open curiosity, intellectual growth, the right amount of challenge, and contagious joy. In our church, it’s not acceptable to bad-mouth people because they vote differently. We don’t do that here. We don’t hate people for their opinions. Here’s what we do: we eat well. We look out for each other. We welcome strangers in a way that lets them know they are at home. We work together to care for the least of these in our community. We laugh a lot. We are bonded by our love of music, art, and storytelling, based on our mountain heritage. Our culture is divided. Our church is not. We follow Jesus.

As we celebrate the three-fold nature of God for Trinity Sunday, our featured art is "Boga nikt nigdy nie widział, Jednorodzony Bóg, który jest w łonie Ojca, o Nim pouczył" ("No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, has made Him known") by the Polish artist Sylwia Perczak. The Art and Theology website says of this piece, "Perczak chooses to keep God the Father, who is incorporeal, out of frame, with the exception of his hands, which gesture to the Son, who holds the Spirit." You can learn more about Perczak and her work at her instagram account, https://www.instagram.com/perczaksylwia/

Tomorrow, May 24, we will have a congregation-wide field trip to join our friends at Montreat for their annual Kirkin' o' the Tartan worship service. This will be a wonderful and memorable day with good fellowship and some of the world's best preaching for the great festival of Pentecost. If you have Scottish ancestry, you're encouraged to wear your tartan, or you can always wear red for Pentecost! Please note: we will not have Faith Development or worship at in Canton, but will be back on May 31.

For those who wish to carpool or caravan tomorrow, we will leave our church's parking lot at 9:15 a.m. SHARP. If you plan to drive by yourself, be aware that parking is limited in Montreat, and leave yourself plenty of time. If you requested a lunch ticket, you will get it from Esta in the morning.

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY:
9:15 a.m.: Carpool and Caravan vehicles leave Canton Presbyterian Church
10:00 a.m.: Arrive at Montreat Conference Center

For the Sunday on which we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, May 17, we are featuring artwork from an older era than usual. Open the image to see the full painting, called "The Ascension," painted by Adriaen van Overbeke in the 16th century in Belgium. "Fine Art America" says: "Bizarre, Pythonesque visualization of the ascension of Christ, with only his feet visible as he disappears upwards through a circle of dark cloud, painted by Antwerp mannerist Adriaen van Overbeke c.1516. If you look carefully, you can see Christ's footprints in the soft soil or sand at the top of the hill beneath him. But, oddly, his feet do not bear the marks of the nail that pinned him to the cross. And why are the clouds so dark and threatening? The convention of times was for a glorious show of white, billowing cloud and streaming sunshine to reflect the significance of this key Biblical event. All in all, an exceptionally strange, but strikingly colorful image typical of the somewhat retro, Antwerp mannerist style. Little is known about the life of van Overbeke, except that he was active between 1508-29. After 1529, he is no longer mentioned in the archives."

For this Sunday, the Sixth Sunday of Easter, we are focusing on the story of Jesus and Peter on the lakeshore in John 21. Our featured art is by Fr. Maximino Cerezo Barredo, CMF. Fr. Barredo, a liberation theologian and well-known artist, was one of the great illustrators of the gospel in our lifetimes. For more on the work of Fr.
