"The United Methodist Church forms disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections."

In May 2025, the bishops of the United Methodist Church released a vision statement designed to help the church live into the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. They built this statement around the themes of loving, serving, and leading. The invitation comes, however, not simply through the words, but in the way they are described. We are not just called to love, but to love boldly. We don’t just hear a call to serve, but to serve joyfully. And we aren’t seeking those who will just lead, but those who will lead courageously. The adverbs add a spark to the statement.

We invite you to join us over the next six weeks as we consider this statement in our church.

April 3 – Good Friday: The Cost of Love

“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” — Luke 23:34

The Social Creed proclaims:
“We believe in the right and duty of persons to work for the glory of God and the good of themselves and others and in the protection of their welfare in so doing; in the rights to property as a trust from God, collective bargaining, and responsible consumption; and in the elimination of economic and social distress. We dedicate ourselves to peace throughout the world, to the rule of justice and law among nations, and to individual freedom for all people of the world.”

Here we arrive at the cross.

Everything we have prayed, confessed, and practiced throughout Lent converges here. Justice and peace are not abstract ideals, they are crucified realities. The commitment to human dignity meets its greatest test at Golgotha.

And still, Jesus speaks forgiveness.

The cross reveals both the depth of human brokenness and the greater depth of divine love. God does not abandon the world to violence. God absorbs it, transforms it, and opens the way to new life.

This is the cost of love. This is the hope of the world.

Practice: Extend forgiveness, in word or in prayer, to someone who has wounded you.
Prayer: Crucified Christ, lead me into your costly, redeeming love.

April 2 – A Church for the World (Maundy Thursday)

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” — John 13:35

The Social Creed declares:
“We commit ourselves to the rights of men, women, children, youth, young adults, the aging, and people with disabilities; to improvement of the quality of life; and to the rights and dignity of all persons.”

On this night, Jesus washes feet. Leadership becomes service. Authority becomes humility.

The church is called to embody this same love, not in words alone, but in action. Every commitment to justice, dignity, and care flows from this table, from this towel, from this command: love one another.

Holy Week reminds us that the credibility of the church rests not in power, but in love that kneels.

Lent has been forming us into this kind of community.

Practice: Serve someone today in a quiet, tangible way.
Prayer: Servant Christ, teach me to love as you have loved.

April 1 – The Cross and Suffering Love

“He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.” — Philippians 2:8

The Social Creed proclaims:
“We believe in the Holy Spirit, through whom we acknowledge God’s gifts, and we repent of our sin in misusing these gifts to idolatrous ends.”

The cross is not only something Jesus endures — it becomes the shape of the Christian life. The Spirit sustains us not by removing suffering, but by accompanying us through it.

Holy Week strips away illusions of power. The kingdom of God is revealed not in domination, but in self-giving love. The Spirit keeps us faithful in that pattern.

Lent has been forming us for this moment — to recognize that real transformation comes not through control, but through surrender.

The Spirit empowers us to remain in love even when it costs.

Practice: Offer a quiet act of service that no one else will notice.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, strengthen me to walk the way of the cross.
