First United Methodist Church of Canonsburg

First United Methodist Church of Canonsburg Beautiful, historic Church. Casual Worship Sundays 8:45 am. Blended music-Hymns & contemporary worship music/organist and New Day Band. Wesley was a pastor. Mr. I.

Mission focused, spreading God's love to bring everyone into God's family. Our church is part of the Methodist movement, founded by John Wesley in 18th century England, a reformation of the Anglican Church in which Mr. That movement stood for biblical integrity and social justice. Wesley believed that Christians can only be true to the Word of God as long as they were caring for the downtrodden of

the world. First Church was founded in 1842 by Rev. C. Pershing, great uncle of General John Pershing. Our roots are intertwined with those of the region; our church traces its birth to the days when Mr. Pershing was a student at Jefferson College here in Canonsburg (now a part of Washington and Jefferson College in nearby Washington, Pa). He searched for other Methodists with whom he could share his faith. The group grew and prospered and became a chartered congregation in 1845. Our first church building was built in 1847 on Greenside Avenue, the first church building of any denomination within the boundaries of the borough. That building was sold to the pioneer Roman Catholics in 1887 and became Saint Patrick Church. A larger building was erected at that time on our present site. The congregation has survived and flourished through a remarkable time in our nation’s and region’s history; she has seen growth and decline, joy and sorrow. But we keep one prayer constantly, one alone. To bear the name of Jesus Christ, who empowers us all to be his people! In July 2021, we joined with Fawcett UM and Bridgeville UM Churches to form the new Best Friends In Christ United Methodist Charge. Our Pastor is Pastor Jerome Forkpa Kennedy.

What an incredible morning at the Veterans Breakfast Club this morning! Thank you to Todd DePastino of the VBC, to all of our volunteers, to the vendors, The Vet Center and UPMC for Life, and to our 65+ attendees. Some of the veterans in attendance had the chance to share their experiences and it was an absolutely eye-opening and fascinating experience. Thank you also to Alterios Catering for the delicious food and to R. Simonin Insurance Agency and McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home for your generous donations to this particular program, as well as to all of the sponsors who keep the Veterans Breakfast Clubs going. We were blessed to host this and we hope and pray you might find time to attend an event in the future. It is a wonderful place to meet some fine individuals, break some bread together and share in some healing. God bless the veterans, and God bless America.

We invite you to join us this Sunday, September 13 for worship, which begins at 8:45 AM either in-person or livestreaming . If you're a grandparent, we wish you a very Happy Grandparents Day Sunday! This week, we will read about the diversity of forgiveness, from the triumphal story of God's saving Israel in Exodus to the very different example in Matthew. Pastor Deb's message, "How Do We Forgive?" will provide helpful insight and blessing! Hope you can attend!

We are excited to welcome back the New Day Band from their summer hiatus! We will also be collecting our monthly Meals on Wheels donations. Thank you in advance if you are able to help.

You can grab a copy of the bulletin and announcements at www.cbgumc.org. As a reminder, we are hosting the free Veterans Breakfast Club this Monday at 8:30 AM at the Chartiers Community Center. You do not have to be a veteran to attend. It is always a wonderful blessing to be present and share a meal and stories with our veterans. You can still RSVP to [email protected].

God bless you, and have a great weekend.

Merriam-Webster defines prayer as: (1) : an address (such as a petition) to God or a god in word or thought; (2) an earnest request or wish. We take prayer seriously here at First UMC. We know that: "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20) and that God hears and knows the needs of everyone who knocks at His door. Each week we pray for 10 members/families chosen alphabetically, as long as the prayer list we keep each week for those in need. We invite you to join us each week. Our 10 members this week include Anne/Kyle D.; Erica/JR G.; Sally/Robert J.; Brian E.; Larry/Ann G.; Viola/Joseph J.; Jennifer E.; Debra/David G.; Linda F. and Terri G. You may grab a copy of our latest prayer requests at www.cbgumc.org. See this week's bulletin tab for a complete copy. If you are in need of prayer, please head to the Prayer Request button on our home page. God bless you, and thank you if you've prayed alongside us today.
