(From our dear friend, Mary Korf.)
~
There are no loftier words than shepherd/poet/king David’s description of the deep awe that a glimpse of the vast universe inspires.
Psalm 19 begins with “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.”
The photos from the recent probe into the incomprehensible distance of billions of light years have been awesome, and I don’t use that word lightly.
Just how big, and mighty, and powerful, and creative is our GOD?
We can say with our mouths that He is infinite, and we can try to define eternity in our conversation or write it on paper.
But our brains cannot even touch upon the implications of this truth— that there is no beginning or end or peripheral limit to God.
He is everywhere, unable to be contained. His supreme power is coupled with pure, all-encompassing wisdom. His love is unquenchable and unalterable. Incredibly, you and I are the zenith of His creation and the focus of His existence.
He desires for us to approach Him, and learn of Him, and lean on Him. He wants us all to Himself, to the extent that He sacrificed His only Son so that we would forsake other gods and distractions, and turn wholeheartedly to Him.
How does that translate to our existence?
Well, in the here and now we are like the grass that grows, is green for a season, and then withers and dies. But in the hand and the plan of our God, we are eternal.
The Bible practically screams that very message over and over again.
1 John 5:13 “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Titus 1:2 “…in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago.”
1 Timothy 6:1 “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.”
In every chapter of every book He is the greatest Fisher of Men of all time. He designed the galaxies and suns and moons and stars and planets and black holes and comets just for you.
Yes, you.
He went to incomprehensible lengths to impress you.
He is wooing you with beauty and order and balance and detail and enormity. Your name—your simple tiny unimportant insignificant name-- is inscribed on the palm of His mighty hand. (Isaiah 49:16)
He LOVES you, and He deeply longs to express that love forever. How can we do less but inscribe His name on the portal of our hearts?
(This is written in memory of the daughter/granddaughter of dear friends of mine, Sam and Heather and Dan and Ruth. Rest in peace, little Hannah [December 6, 2020-July 13,2022]. God whispered your name, and now You are safe in the arms of Jesus, tasting the eternity for which the rest of us have to wait...)
