St. Luke Episcopal Church

St. Luke Episcopal Church One of the few original landmarks of early pioneer Cannelton. St. Luke Episcopal Church is the oldest surviving structure in Cannelton.

Erected in 1845 it has served as a place of worship for Unitarian, Roman Catholics, Methodists, as well as Episcopalians. A service on the 7th Sunday of Trinity (Now called Pentecost season), August 3, 1851, by the Right Reverend Benjamin B. Smith, Episcopal Bishop of Kentucky, is the oldest service for which there is a record. The stained glass windows behind the altar were made in England circa

1800, and the original mahogany pews are still in use. The church started a private school (St. Luke's Academy) in 1861, and the building served as a meeting place for the community in the early years. Luke's was placed on the National List of Historical Places in 1983.

Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. ~ The Book of Common Prayer

Lord God, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his body to be whipped and his face to be spit upon: Give us grace to accept joyfully the sufferings of the present time, confident of the glory that shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
