What can we do when troubles come? With Psalm 121:1-2 as the primary text for this study, Pastor John Chowning raises the question that people of all generations have asked - what can we do when troubles come? When troubles come, we must view them correctly, respond to them directly, and look with confidence to God, from whom all our help comes.

We extend our condolences to the family of Dr. Lincoln Bingham who passed away at age 94. Dr. Bingham was a giant among Baptist leaders who spent his life in tearing down racial barriers and working to bring people together as one in Jesus Christ. He was a good friend and mentor to this pastor and challenged me in my own pastoral ministry and journey to seek to build bridges and bring people together. He was a major influencer in our outreach ministry at Campbellsville University. Many recall the times that Dr. Bingham peached at our church, and I was honored to preach in two of his churches. He was a powerful preacher who was devoted to the truth of John 3:16 and one who truly lived what he preached and believed. The greatest tribute that can be given to a Christian saint like Dr. Bingham is to renew our own commitment to the call of Jesus Christ, the pursuit of unity in the midst of diversity as the Apostle Paul wrote, and to truly believe that all people are created in the image of God.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – A legendary Kentucky Baptist pastor who faithfully served for more than six decades and who worked tirelessly to break down racial barriers has died at 94.

In our text from 1 Corinthians 1:22-24, Paul, the great apostle, affirms the uniqueness of the cross of Jesus Christ. He proclaims Christ crucified as the essence of the Christian faith in verse 23. In this study of the theology of the cross, SBC Pastor John Chowning discusses Paul's proclamation of the facts - the bare facts of Paul's message of salvation stripped to its core: Jesus Christ crucified.

Here’s a word from Ian Simkins that is worth your time to read. A key statement: “The Gospel is not simply rescue FROM something. It is an invitation TO something. Into resurrected life right here and now.”

You are encouraged to take a moment and read these words from Ian Simkins on the Holy Spirit.

Jesus didn’t say, “Try your hardest and hope for the best.” He said, “Apart from me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Not a little, not sometimes. Nothing.

The Christian life is not merely hard work or moral effort. It doesn’t run on willpower or good intentions but on the very presence of God dwelling in us through the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus ascended, He didn’t leave behind a manual. He sent a Person. The Spirit is not a vague force or distant energy. He is Comforter. Counselor. Convicter. Empowerer. Advocate.

He is God in us, leading, forming, refining, reminding, and filling.

And the Spirit gives us power not just to do the work of Jesus but to become like Jesus in the process.

And becoming like Jesus is not something we can white-knuckle or manufacture in our own. It takes effort, for sure. But it also requires transformation that we cannot muster on our own.

Fruit doesn’t grow because the branch tries really hard.

Fruit grows because the branch stays connected to the Vine.

The Spirit is the One who makes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control possible (Galatians 5:22–23).

Maybe you feel stuck. Worn out. Like you’re failing at following Jesus.

Maybe it’s time to stop trying to do it without Him.

The invitation is to surrender more deeply.
To rely on the Spirit moment by moment, step by step, breath by breath.

Prayer is not just how we express dependence on God, it’s how we experience dependence on God.

We don’t pray to impress Him but to abide in Him.

To let Him guide, convict, encourage, correct, and empower us.

The Spirit is not optional for Christian living.
He is Christian living.

And the good news?
You’re not alone.
You’ve never been alone.

And you don’t have to figure this out in your own strength.

The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11).

He is willing, present, and eternally able.

Invite Him.
Trust Him.
Walk with Him.

Because without Him, we can’t.
But with Him, nothing is impossible.
