The History of Camp Verde

The first grave recorded at the Clear Creek Cemetery is for Maggie Ferrel. She was buried here in 1884. She committed su***de because her parents wanted her to marry a man she didn’t like, at least that is the story that has been told over the years.

The Clear Creek Cemetery is a pioneer cemetery. It lies on 5 acres of land that was donated by the Coconino National Forest. There are 1500 grave sites at the cemetery, some with stories just as interesting as Maggie’s, some maybe not as interesting. But all the people that are buried at the cemetery were people just like you and I, they had Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Husbands and kids. They lived, loved, worked and died. These people need to be remembered and their final resting places have to be preserved. A lot of the graves at the cemetery do not have any living relatives so it is our responsibility to make sure they are cared for.

Since the Cemetery is on Forest Service land the plots cannot now or never be sold. Everything is accomplished by the hard work of volunteers and donations.

Unfortunately, as the cemetery gets fuller the donations get smaller.
