Catechism of the Catholic Church 2314
"Every act of war directed to the indiscriminate destruction of whole cities or vast areas with their inhabitants is a crime against God and man, which merits firm and unequivocal condemnation." (GS 80, 3)

A danger of modern warfare is that it provides the opportunity to those who possess modern scientific weapons, especially atomic, biological, or chemical weapons, to commit such crimes.

Scripture does not support a "nation under God." We might have a tradition of pledging this but in a different context where religious liberty, that is, the free exercise of one's religion irrespective of that religion, was upheld. Scripture proclaims that All nations are accountable to the sovereignty of God - Isaiah Chapters 13-23, or Jeremiah Chapters 46-51 or Psalm 2. For the early Church Fathers, God's Holy Church was the locus or center of morality and the follower of Christ was to model good citizenship so as to bring God's friendship to the world - to be "salt and light" to the nations. We have a bloody history in Europe and elsewhere where the Church either by design by earthly bishops seeking temporal power or coercion of temporal powers to gain some spiritual authority from the Church have, in essence, stifled the Holy Spirit, a mortal sin. Let us pray that like our communion of saints who model humility and courage, we,too, "seek first the kingdom of God" and not try to make God fit whatever greatness we proclaim as a nation. May the world and its people and all of Creation be His. Libera nos domine!

This week the Church celebrates , commemorating the anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on care for creation, "Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home." The encyclical is divided into six chapters which together provide a thorough analysis of human life and its three intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbor, and with the earth.
