Something we always need to remember is that God requires us to use reason or logic when determining what He desires of us. In the Old Testament, God said “Come let us reason together” (Isa. 1:18a). In the New Testament, Peter records that we are to “desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). The Greek word translated here “word” is logikos, which is where our English word “logical” is derived. What Peter is telling his audience is— in order to grow, we must reason with the Scriptures to gain understanding. God instructs us to test all things and to hold fast only to those things which are good (1 Thess. 5:21). In order to test all things, we must logically consider them and hold to only those things which are good. Second Corinthians 13:4a instructs us to “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.” To examine or test yourself is to use the laws of logic or reason to determine whether how you’re living matches the way that God desires you to live according to the Scriptures. Contrary to what the world teaches that faith and logic or reason are contradictory to one another, the Christian does not have to remove his brain to have faith; he must engage it.

I enjoyed watching the Super Bowl this evening and it is even better that the Kansas City Chiefs won, but do you know what I would enjoy more? Hearing from God “well done thou good and faithful servant” at the end of my life (Matt. 25:21-23).

Once again, this is very interesting, more from Calvin on instrumental music! Calvin calls mechanical, instrumental, music “corruption, creeping in that defiles the pure worship of God”. Calvin had strong feeling on this matter. As I said previously, this post is not an approval of what Calvin teaches on this subject or any other. Please study for yourself before accepting teachings from any teacher.

I am posting John Calvin’s thoughts on instrumental music, not because I want people to believe his teachings, but to inform as to what he believed. Several of the men who either started a denomination or were instrumental directly or indirectly in the starting of a denomination did not believe in the use of instruments in worship. Instrumental music has not always been as widely accepted in the past as it is today. John Calvin believed that the Catholic Church had foolishly borrowed instrumental music from the Jews, and he called the Catholics ‘fond of outward pomp’ because of it. This was to say they were showing off to be seen of men. He also believed that playing an instrument in worship was like speaking in unknown tongues, and he recognized that the apostle Paul only allowed, in the public assembly of the Saints, known tongues. This is to say a mechanical instrument, because it is speaking in an unknown tongue which cannot be understood, is not allowed according to Calvin. This post is for information only and is not a blanket acceptance of his teachings on this subject or any other. I want to be clear that I do not endorse John Calvin as a teacher on any subject. I simply found this interesting as I am studying this topic. This is also true of Charles Spurgeon; I do not endorse him as a teacher as well.
