Align yourself with God's purpose.

His purpose is ultimately not so that you can get everything exactly like you want it. It's not for you to pitch a fit and stomp your foot. It's to glorify him to do the good works that he's set you apart to accomplish.

Align yourself with God's purpose. And remember this. To make your purpose God's purpose is idolatry.

If you make your purpose God's purpose, then what you've done is you said, "Lord, here's what I'm going to do. And now, God, I want you to bless it. We don't get to say, "God, this is my plan." And then God gets on board.

No, no, no.

You need to make God's purpose your purpose. God comes first.

Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will grant you the desires of your heart."

Not, delight yourself in your heart, and he will grant you the Lord."

No. You start with God's delight, and then you trust that as he shapes, transforms, and changes your heart, you get aligned with his purposes.

You were created on purpose for a purpose. God has a purpose and a plan for you. And you're called to align yourself with God's purpose.

It says in verse 35 (Luke 7:24-35). "Yet wisdom is justified by all her children." In verse 31, Jesus says, "To what shall I compare the people of this generation? They're like children sitting in the marketplace." So he looks at the Pharisees and lawyers, and he says, "Y'all are just children."

Just imagine how these religious leaders felt at those stinging words of Jesus. I'm not sure when the last time is that somebody looked at you as an adult and said, "You're acting like a child." But when that happens, you don't usually respond with, "Amen, brother. Thank you for pointing that out to me."

In verse 35, he says, "Wisdom is justified by all her children."

Who are the children of wisdom in this passage? The children of wisdom are the people who have trusted in the ministry of John and the ministry of Jesus. And he says they're justified. They're justified by what they believe. They're proven by who they follow.

He looks at them. says, "Y'all are acting like children, but the children you should be are children of God and not children of wrath, but you put yourself in opposition to the things of the Lord."

Aligning yourself with God's purpose means understanding what God created you for. The Westminster Confession says that we were created to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Billy Graham once said, "I believe that every person was created with a purpose to get to know God and to live for him."

Ephesians 2:10 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

If you are a Christian, he's already done all the work for you. All you're supposed to do is walk into it.

Why do we get suspicious about the teaching of the word and the things of the word? In this passage of scripture (Luke 7:24-35), we have a group of people who don't want to be satisfied. They're suspicious about everything. So they're suspicious about John because he didn't eat and drink. He was an ascetic.

And Jesus says, "Oh, John came eating no bread and drinking no w**e. You say he has a demon. But the son of man has come eating and drinking. You say, 'Look at him. A glutton and a drunkard'."

Do you know what they were suspicious about?

Anybody that would take away their power. But wait. If y'all are like me, you say, "We're not powerful like them." So what are we?

We're not suspicious about people that take away our power. We're suspicious about anybody that takes away our autonomy.

The power we don't want to give up is the power over ourselves. The power over me.

And so it's easy to throw suspicion at somebody who says what I don't like to hear. "Oh well, you know him. He just takes things too seriously." Or "Oh, you know him. He doesn't take things seriously enough."

Well, maybe the fact of the matter is we just don't want to be changed.
