Pride (In The Name Of Love)

The Second Sunday After Pentecost will be Pride Sunday for us, with a service that will celebrate the welcome and inclusion of LGBTQ folks in our church life that we have practiced for going on 30 years. (A group from the congregation will join Saturday's Boston Pride Parade.)

Our 9 a.m. worship service is in-person only. The 11 o'clock service is in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. We look forward to seeing you!

Give Peace A Chance

For Trinity Sunday, Mitch and Barb will preach from two New Testament passages -- Jesus's instruction to his followers at the end of Matthew 28 to share their discipleship with new believers throughout the world, and Paul's plea in 2 Corinthians 13 to the church in that city to "live in peace."

Our 9 a.m. service will be in-person only. The 11 o'clock service will be in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. Adult Forum and Sunday School for children and youth will be at 10.

Looking ahead to Pride Month, you're invited to join a church group at the Boston Pride March on Saturday, June 6. We'll hold a special "Pride Sunday" service the next day. We look forward to seeing you this Sunday and next Sunday.

Light My Fire

For Pentecost Sunday, Barb and Mitch will tell the Acts 2 story of what is called "the birth of the church," with the fire of the spirit and Jesus followers hearing each other's language -- the end of the Tower of Babel myth of how humanity lost a common tongue.

Our 9 a.m. service will be in-person only. The 11 o'clock service will be in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. We look forward to seeing you!

Time Of The Season

For Ascension Sunday, Mitch and Barb will preach from the Acts 1 story of the resurrected Jesus's spiritual departure from his disciples -- pictured as his rising into the sky. This Sunday is the prelude to Pentecost Sunday on May 24, which observes the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the symbolic birth of the church.

Our 9 a.m. service is in-person only. The 11 o'clock service is in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. Adult Forum and Sunday School for children and youth will be at 10. We look forward to seeing you!

The Thing With Feathers

For the Sixth Sunday of Easter, Mitch and Barb will preach from two New Testament passages about hope -- one from 1 Peter 3, which encourages us to speak of our faith from the hope within us, and from John 14, where Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will abide in our hope.

Our 9 a.m. service is in-person only. The 11 o'clock service is in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. Adult Forum and Sunday school for children and youth will be at 10. We look forward to seeing you!

The Church Is A Watering Hole

For the Fifth Sunday of Easter, we will complete a project of discussion and reflection that we began last fall, looking at who we are as a congregation, and what the future of our community mission is. As our co-pastor Barb Lemmel put it last Sunday, we'll be looking further at how we can be a "watering hole," where we gather for spiritual nourishment, rather than being a a fenced-in church with a set of fixed beliefs that we must accept.

Rather than holding a regular service, a concluding session of "working worship" will begin with the 11 o'clock service and end with lunch and thought-sharing in the vestry. Please join us if you're curious. As we try to demonstrate week to week, all are welcome -- including you.

Sheep May Safely Graze

For the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Barb and Mitch will preach from Jesus's teaching in John 10 that the sheep -- his followers -- will follow him because they know his voice is the true voice.

Our 9 a.m. service is in-person only. The 11 o'clock service is in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. Adult Forum and Sunday School for children and youth is at 10. We look forward to seeing you!

Gimme Some Truth

For the Third Sunday of Easter, Mitch will look back to John 18 and Holy Week with "Pilate Reflects," an in-character monologue by the Roman governor who -- in the Gospel tellings -- didn't think Jesus was guilty of the Jewish priests' accusations, but yielded to the crowd who called for Jesus's crucifixion.

Our 9 a.m. service will be in-person only. The 11 o'clock service is in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel at harvardepworthchurch.org. Adult Forum and Sunday School for children and youth will be at 10.

Also on Sunday, Boston University theology professor Katheryn Pfisterer Darr will give our annual Edward L. Mark Lecture at 7 p.m. Dr. Darr's topic will be "Saying the Sour Grapes Saying: Disparities in Divine Justice," an exploration of how we respond when the Bible doesn't speak with one voice about what divine justice is.

The lecture is free to the public. We look forward to seeing you for morning worship and the lecture! (Art by Virgil Cantini)

Touch Me

For the Second Sunday of Easter, Barb and Mitch will preach from the John 20 story of the disciple Thomas's first encounter with the Risen Jesus, a week after his Resurrection -- the encounter that gave him the perhaps unfair nickname "Doubting Thomas."

Our 9 a.m. service will be in-person only. The 11 o'clock service will be in-person and live streamed on our YouTube channel on our web site, harvardepworthchurch.org. Adult Forum and Sunday School for children and youth will be at 10. We look forward to seeing you.

Looking ahead to Sunday, April 19, Boston University professor Katheryn Pfisterer Darr will give our annual Edward L. Mark Lecture. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. and is free to the public. Dr. Darr's topic will be “Saying the ‘Sour Grapes’ Saying: The Hebrew Bible on God's Administration of Justice.”
