Following our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. service, we gathered for a powerful workshop with exploring Jewish values and LGBTQIA+ allyship. Together, we reflected on how tikkun olam calls us to action, discussed the current challenges facing our trans, nonbinary, and intersex siblings, and learned concrete ways to show up as allies.
From exploring our personal values rooted in Jewish tradition to understanding microaggressions and talking through how to respond when someone comes out, this was a space for learning, unlearning, and growth. Many of us even learned new gender-neutral terminology like "nibling" (for niece or nephew) as we worked to make our language more inclusive.
As Pirkei Avot teaches us: "You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it." Allyship is action-oriented, and every step matters.
Thank you to Keshet and to our LGBTQIA+ Working Group, Ad-Hoc Committee, and Mensch Club for co-sponsoring this meaningful afternoon.
