Chag Pesach Sameach! From our seder to yours we wish you a joyous Passover ๐ŸŽ‰ Our Community Seder took place last night; it was a beautiful celebration with music, stories, and of course plenty of food! This morning, our Sunday School students learned all about the history and rituals of the holiday, and our 4/5 and 6/7 classes even made their own charoset ๐ŸŽ

Look at this delicious art! Last Sunday, we observed Tu B'Shevat, and for our 4/5 and 6/7 classes, that meant crafting with chocolate and fruit. Our students made trees (some more abstract than others ๐Ÿ˜‚) and learned about the significance of the holiday.
The 4/5 and 6/7 curriculum is centered around cooking, with a focus on social justice and community service. At KB, we blend Jewish learning and traditions with fun and yummy activities. Join us for our next community gathering on March 1st, where we'll be celebrating Purim with a carnival and plenty of sweet treats! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿซ๐ŸŽญ๐ŸŽช

Join us tomorrow as we observe Tu B'Shevat!
Tu Bโ€™Shvat invites us to reflect on our relationship not just to trees but to the land and places we inhabit - and how we might learn from them. In this talk, weโ€™ll learn how place-based immersion forms the pedagogical core of the Gull Island Institute, a liberal arts non-profit located on Cape Cod that is grounded in three โ€œpillarsโ€ of academics, physical labor, and student self-governance. Together, weโ€™ll discuss several questions that are central to Gull Island curricula that have resonances with Jewish theology (in general) and Tu Bโ€™Shvat (in particular). These include: what does it mean to inhabit a place well? What is good work? What (or who) is education for? What are our responsibilities to the environment, and to each other?

Following our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. service, we gathered for a powerful workshop with exploring Jewish values and LGBTQIA+ allyship. Together, we reflected on how tikkun olam calls us to action, discussed the current challenges facing our trans, nonbinary, and intersex siblings, and learned concrete ways to show up as allies.

From exploring our personal values rooted in Jewish tradition to understanding microaggressions and talking through how to respond when someone comes out, this was a space for learning, unlearning, and growth. Many of us even learned new gender-neutral terminology like "nibling" (for niece or nephew) as we worked to make our language more inclusive.

As Pirkei Avot teaches us: "You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it." Allyship is action-oriented, and every step matters.

Thank you to Keshet and to our LGBTQIA+ Working Group, Ad-Hoc Committee, and Mensch Club for co-sponsoring this meaningful afternoon.

Our next community gathering is TOMORROW, January 11th! We will be observing Martin Luther King day with a service on Building Bridges Across Race and Religion. Our guest speaker is Ken Shulman, a veteran print and broadcast journalist, and longtime Board member and past president at Boston Jewish Film. At BJF, he runs the School Initiative to Combat Antisemitism (SITCA.) SITCA uses the power of film to connect young people across differences, and to recognize and counter both racism and antisemitism. Ken's talk will include powerful clips from SITCA films, and examples of how students learn how to respond to antisemitism, racism, and other forms of hate in their schools and communities. Launched in 2019, SITCA has presented to over 2,000 students in greater Boston, and is an inspiring model of how to forge vital alliances.

As always, there will be Sunday School and childcare for the littles. See you there!
