HUUMS - Harvard Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Students

HUUMS - Harvard Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Students HUUMS is the UU Community at Harvard Divinity School. We worship together every Friday at Noon in Divinity Chapel. at the cafe in Swartz Hall.

HUUMS is a community of students enrolled at Harvard Divinity School (HDS) as well as members schools of the Boston Theological Institute (BTI). We are a community of students, for students and by students. Our mission is to support one another in our studies, vocations, and lives through worship, professional and spiritual development opportunities, and fellowship. We strive to authentically repr

esent the interests and needs of Unitarian Universalist students at HDS. We also seek to advocate for an academic environment at HDS that fosters excellence in Unitarian Universalist scholarship and ministry. Regardless of faith affiliation, we welcome and encourage students and members of our community, both visiting and local, to join us in worship and fellowship! Our weekly worship is held on Fridays at noon in Divinity Chapel, Divinity Hall and is followed by fellowship lunch at 1:00 p.m.

Today is the first day of classes at Harvard Divinity School and was also the first Noon Service of the year, where different faith traditions get to put on a service for the wider HDS community. HUUMS was honored to be the first facilitators for the new school year, and we put together a familiar water communion tradition to mark this special occasion. Thanks to all who planned, participated, or were present in body or spirit for this beautiful tradition!

Welcome back everyone! As we settle in after the first week of in person learning, we are going to take this opportunity to re-introduce (or introduce for the very first time!) some of our student-run organizations here at .

First up, HDS Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Students (HUUMS). HUUMS graciously hosted a moving first Noon Service of the year on Wednesday and are here to tell you a little more about what they do and how you can get involved. Are you a part of a student group that would like to be featured on the HDS account? DM us!

What you should know: HUUMS students and friends gather once a week, Fridays at noon. Students plan and lead our worship services and then we all have lunch together. Like UUs in general, we are interfaith and welcoming of people of any gender, sexuality, race, nationality, ability, and religion or lack thereof. As long as you treat others with kindness, you're welcome in HUUMS.

Organizational Goal: To support each other in living our Unitarian Universalist values while we are in divinity school, including friendship, financial support of other student orgs, and participation in the justice work of the greater student body.

Impact at HDS: One example of living our UU values is that we host UU history tours for visiting congregations and that work gives us funds to provide small grants other groups and students, such as HDS Holy Bees, the Material Aid and Advocacy Program, Freedom School, as well as donations to outside orgs supporting UUs of color.

Many of us are in training to become UU ministers, so we have a very praxis-oriented approach to divinity school. We are committed to concrete work that makes the world safer and more equitable for all humans in harmony with the Earth.

"Despite loneliness and change: We are connected," Rev. Leslie Takahashi reminds us. "Even in the face of the inevitable losses of life: We are connected."

Across the limits of our imagination, we are connected.
