What is the secret to contentment? What does contentment mean? Philippians 4:10-13 show us that we should have the enjoyment and discipline of contentment by enjoying and thanking God for the blessings He gives us and not approaching Him with an attitude of entitlement.
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJV
When we depend on people or things to fill our cup, we’ll always feel the highs and lows of disappointment. But when our contentment is found in God, our cup stays full, and every blessing beyond that will cause your cup to overflow. For it is God, not His gifts that should fill your cup. God owes you and me nothing, everything we have is a gift of grace from Him.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
James 1:17 KJV
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
Psalm 23:5-6 KJV
When we look to the world to fill our cup, we’ll always come up empty at times. But when our hearts are satisfied in God, we can truly say, “my cup runneth over.”
Here are a couple of questions to take into this next week:
1. Is your cup full? And is it full of God?
2. Have you been approaching God with an attitude of entitlement?
3. Have you become bitter towards God for taking away the things that you were filling your cup with?
