We enter God's presence today and admit that we don't always embrace or live out the faith to which we have been called. Through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, God guarantees His promises, assurances, and benefits for all who take up their cross and follow Jesus---the way, the truth, and the life. Martin Luther wrote: "This is the meaning of the word of Christ spoken here: 'to believe in God and to face without fear whatever may oppose and confront us.'

Paul unmasks an entire culture of religious idolatry where objects of worship are rubbish and religious assertions are merely fabricated in the minds of men. In the midst of the ungodly, he preaches the counsels of God, tells of the need for repentance, and confirms the resurrection of the dead. The resurrected Christ is the one we worship. His commandments are divine assertions. By Baptism, we are believers in all these things, loved by God and enabled to love.

This day we are often reminded how Jesus is the Good Shepherd that cares for His sheep. However, in the Gospel, Jesus gives us another different and vivid picture of Himself: as a door. He says, "I am the Door of the sheep . . if anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture" (John 10:7, 9). Jesus is the only way to salvation; as His sheep, we look only to Him and listen for His loving voice alone. What a contrast there is between a thief, who would never use the door properly and brings only destruction, and Jesus, the Door, who brings abundant life.

Today, we mark the beginning of Holy Week, as we celebrate Palm Sunday the Sunday of the Passion, recalling our Lord's triumphant entry into Jerusalem amidst the shouts of "Hosanna,"' as well as hearing once again of our Lord's suffering for our salvation.

On the day the sun stopped shining (Luke 23:45), Jesus Christ offered His life in our place upon the cross. The darkness of our sinful souls was placed upon the sinless Son of God. Ridden with the sins of the whole world, Jesus exchanged places with us. He died our death so that we may know His life. He who knew no sin became sin fo us. He cried "Eloi!" so that we could cry "Abba! He was forsaken so that we can be embraced in Father's love. As we come to the cross during our Good Friday service, may we be filled with the riches of grace, shown to us by the One who would go to any lengths to make us His own and give us real life for all eternity.
