Through the prophet Isaiah God invites one and all to come to Him to eat and to drink without cost, as if to a free banquet., Paul laments that many of his fellow Jews have not responded to the invitation, even though they have received blessings throughout history. When Jesus feeds the 5,000 families, it is a tangible reminder of the heavenly banquet to which we are invited. We cannot be content that we are included, though, for at the end of the reading from Isaiah, the Lord lifts our eyes to look toward those who do not yet know the promises of God made to Israel and fulfilled in Jesus. Our worship today follows the sequence of a banquet prepared, an invitation extended to us, and the call to invite others still.

The Christian faith is the way of humble trust in the Lord. In Jesus God Himself unites His power and the weakness of man to overcome sin, death, and the devil and his temptations. Through the Word and Sacrament ministry of the Church faith grasps and hopes in and possesses the same victory established in our Lord's crucifixion and resurrection. With the Apostle Paul we confess, "For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:10).

There are many kinds of peace in the world and in our life experiences from year to year. Some peace is artificial and involves covering over realities that need to be addressed. Simply saying, I am at peace," does not guarantee the full and true shalom that is God's plan for His children. As part of His ministry, Jesus brings a sword to cut through the façade of false peace and bring us true peace with God, the source of total well-being for time and for eternity.
