The Brown Bag of Groceries Story
Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
We originally posted this From The Heart article several months ago, and since that time we have had numerous requests for it to be brought back. So, here it is back by popular demand. We hope you will enjoy this post and share it with your friends.
We have heard story after story about the provisions of God in people’s lives. Over the years, I have shared quite a few of my own. This article is similar but comes from a twenty year old who has been raised in a home of faith.
She shared her story after hearing my husband preach on living out our faith. The daughter of a pastor, she told of how her parents lived each day and week by faith. She shared how they never withheld any hardship from her, and that she oftentimes heard them say that they needed things but their only choice was to have faith that God would provide it. She told how she saw God miraculously provide those needs through a check in the mail or through other means for which the explanation was ONLY GOD!
One day in particular stood out to her when someone showed up at their house with a brown bag full of groceries. She wasn't ashamed to share that story. She actually made it a testimony of how her parents’ faith had flowed over into her own personal belief and intimacy with Christ. Their trust in God was a witness of His faithfulness and provision in her own life. She was proud to say, “I know what it is like to trust God everyday for everything.” That brown bag of groceries arrived full of God and His concern for them. She proudly quoted, “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
As I listened, I was taken back to my own brown bag experience. During my years of grand mal epilepsy, God placed a brown bag of groceries at our front door while we were not at home. No one knew we needed groceries but God. To this day, some 21 years later, we have no idea who placed them by the door, except God Himself. We give Him all the glory and are not ashamed to share how it grew our and our children’s faith as they were with us when we discovered that brown bag of groceries.
Everyone has a brown bag story that should be shared with someone who is weak in their faith. From my heart to yours, I pray that you will share with others, especially your children and loved ones, how God has grown your relationship through brown bag experiences. Romans 1:17 says, “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
