24 Day after Pentecost 2024

“Let’s pass Gramps,” exclaimed Zoe to Uncle Ben!

Last night we – Joe and his girls, Uncle Ben, and Bev and me – went to Excalibur recreation center and played mini golf, road go carts, and had pizza. It was a special time. We were giving our granddaughters a double blessing.

Elisha asked Elijah, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” Elijah’s answer is interesting, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.” To receive a double blessing, and to give a double blessing, time together is required. In spending time with God, with our family, and our neighbors the blessings flow.

This is our prayer today.

Gracious God, You are life. You left the security of heaven to live with us. You brought heaven to earth by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and healing the sick. You brought to us streams of living water in a dry and barren land. We love You Lord for Your wonderful, life-changing presence. After suffering, dying, and rising You met with Peter and the disciples and asked a simple question, “Do you love Me?” Their answer was, “Yes, Lord, we love You.” Then You answered, “Feed My sheep – my people.” You call us Lord to spend time with You, to spend time with our family, and to spend time with our neighbors – to invest in each other. It is in feeding each other where the double-blessings flow. Come Lord Jesus, teach us how to love each other. Teach us how to spend time with each other. In so doing the double-blessings flow. This we pray in Jesus’ name amen.

Isaiah 64:4:

21 Day of Prayer after Pentecost

I was known as the statue when I played baseball, because I would not swing the bat. I have thought about my childhood and baseball many times. I believe the reason I did not swing the bat was I feared failure. That fear froze me in a bad place.

Fear took away my power to swing the bat. Fear caused me to have a self-hate. I could not love who I was. Fear robbed me of the self-discipline that leads to better achievement.

Today we will pray about our confidence in Christ.

This is my prayer today:

“You are our Confidence. You are the Rock of our lives. You are the Strong Tower. We run to You when we are afraid! Gideon was afraid he would never make a decent living. The competition was too great. Midians were always taking his profit. He was depressed. Maria was depressed. She had lived with disease for 18 years. She could do nothing. Jarius was depressed. His daughter was ill. It appeared that she would die. Gideon, Maria, and Jarius are us. Fear grips us. Loss seems to be on the horizon. There is no immediate hope. We are stumbling in the darkness. Yet, You did not leave Gideon in his depression. You visited him. Come gracious Spirit visit us in our offices. Those places where we hide from our Midians. Come Gracious Spirit speak to us. Remind us that we can live. Fill us with Your presence so we will have confidence to live. Come Healing Spirit, let us touch the hem of Your garment in our doctor’s office. Let us experience Your healing flow throughout our bodies. Let us rise from our sick beds. Let us believe. Come Resurrecting Spirit, raise us from our deaths. Awaken us from our nightmares. Let us recover from our bankruptcy. Let us become people of hope. Give us power to live. Give us the love to care. Give us the discipline work in the best way. Come be our Confidence. Be our Rock. Be our Strong Tower. This we pray in Jesus’ name amen.”

This prayer is based on 2 Timothy 1:7.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

Our General Superintendent has called us to 40 Days of Prayer for the Evangelical Methodist Church International General Conference. Starting tomorrow, June 11, will you join us in praying for the final preparations being made for our GC. Join us in praying for all superintendents, speakers, organizers, boards/committees, pastors, laity, and churches that are preparing for this conference and the celebration of 80 years of ministry for the EMC. Holy Spirit, fall afresh on us. Guide us by your blessed hand to seek Your Face and Your Kingdom.

16 Day after Pentecost 2026

“I need to find a new purpose,” my 92-year-old dad said three times in the three weeks before his death. That statement has taught me a great deal since Dad’s passing on July 3, 2019. How is it that someone can look to improve so close to death? Dad must have had hope for a better day. I believe this may be one of the greatest signs that Dad believed even with his doubts. I believe Christian people have hope; hope of salvation; hope of healing; even hope of a better day.

Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4 wrote, we will grieve, but we can grieve in hope. I believe Dad was grieving in those days. Grieving the loss of mobility and independence. He, though, was grieving in the hope of finding a new purpose.

I believe this is relevant to us today. Beverly and I are dealing with a home that has no children for the first time in 36 years! What do we do!? I have a friend who just recently had to place his wife of more than fifty years in a care facility. What does he do since the love of his life no longer lives with him? I have another friend who just buried his mother. What does he do? I have a daughter whose job was just terminated. And she is asking, “What is next?” We need hope.

This is our prayer today.

Gracious God, You are our hope. Your Word – the bible – tells us that without You we are only in darkness and chaos. Sometimes Lord, we live in darkness as Joseph did. We have been imprisoned wrongly. Yet, we are chained to a world we do not deserve. Come Lord Jesus, set us captives free. Sometimes Lord, we live in the chaos of grief. We have lost our job. We have lost our loved one. We have lost our way. Come Lord Jesus into our darkness. Point the way to our new birth as You did with Nicodemus. Teach us again that if we are to see You kingdom, we must be born again. Come Lord Jesus, invade our lostness as did with Mary and Martha. You are the resurrection and the life. Bring us Your life with abundance. Open the gates of heaven and bring us Your hope. This we pray in Jesus’ name amen.

1 Thessalonians 4:13:

“We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.”

“Dad,” Daniel said, “you know you cannot afford to pay for all your children – you have too many – to pay entrance to the Ark.”

Bev and I had just covered the $250 fee for us to enter and experience the Noah’s Ark replica in Kentucky. It was amazing. Someone had to pay, and Daniel is the father of three preschool children. It was our turn. It was in our heart to pay.

Before everything, it was in God’s heart to foot the bill so we might live. When we rebelled and broke God’s heart, nothing changed. God still wanted to pay. God sent Jesus into the world at just the right time to pay for our mistakes.

So what is our response? To glorify God – do what is right, never quit on loving your neighbor, and always acknowledge God who paid the price.

This is our prayer today.

Gracious God, You are the perfect offering. Abraham saw this. Abraham prepared the offering, but when it was time to guarantee the offering, You stepped in. You became the light in the darkness. You passed before the offering. You guaranteed that the offering would not fail. You become the lamb. You became the Scapegoat. You took our brokenness away. You healed our sickness. You paid the price! And today across the globe, people from every nation, language, and tribe are stopping before Jesus and washing their lives in Christ’s love. And we are coming clean! You paid the price! Gracious God, help us offer our neighbors Your great redemptive love. This we pray in Jesus’ name amen.

1 Corinthians 6:19:

“For you were bought with a price; therefore, glorify God.”
