Summertime in the City has arrived! Teachers and school staff members are getting a much needed break. We are days away from VBS 2026 on June 6th from 9 am until noon at The Way of the Cross Church of Nazarene. I love partnering together again for VBS with our brothers and sisters. Melissa Whitten has done an excellent job in planning and working for this year's VBS. The theme this year is Rolling River Rampage from Cokesbury. It is a fun outdoor theme and our Bible study and focus story for VBS is from Session three is Jesus walks with Zacchaeus from Luke 19:1-10. Included in the material is a very well written skit about the meeting of Jesus and Zacchaeus. Raenell and i have parts in the skit.
We are getting closer and closer to our 120th anniversary celebration on July 12th. As of the writing of this article on May 20th, we have only received one remembrance for the booklet. The deadline is June 14th to submit those remembrances to the church email or my email.
From the book Holy Humor by Cal and Rose Samra, I found this story that reminded that June in the old Methodist system was moving time and new appointment time.
The story goes of a zealous, newly ordained Methodist minister was appointed to a small, rural parish. In his first sermon he condemned horse racing, and the sermon went over poorly. A member of the PPRC cautioned: "You should never preach against horse racing because this whole area is known for its fine horses. Many members of the congregation make their living off horses."
The next week the new pastor came down hard on the evils of smoking. Again, his sermon fell flat. Many of his members grew to***co.
On the third Sunday the preacher condemned whiskey drinking, only to discover that there was a big distillery less than five miles from the church. The perplexed preacher called a PPRC meeting and cried out: "What can I preach about?"
The answer came immediately from a woman in back: "Preach against them evil cannibals. There ain't one of them within two thousand miles of here."
I know in the month of May we lost a dear friend and church member in Tommy Morman. Tommy was a dear friend to so many people at our church and in our community. We talked often of us going to a State game together. I hate that we never had the opportunity to go. I know it would have been fun.
I miss my friend. Methodist men or the pancake breakfast will never be the same without my buddy. Let us continue to pray for Ronda and family.
Grace and Peace,
Bro. Johnny
