Prayers of Comfort:
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Beth Babcock. Beth slipped away peacefully this morning. Her presence and spirit will be deeply missed. The family is planning a service to honor Beth at St. Paul in the near future, and we will share the date and time once it is confirmed.

Please keep the family and friends of Beth in your prayers, especially Dean, as they navigate this time of grief. We pray for comfort to those whose sorrow comes in waves—that they may feel God’s strength in their lowest moments and know they are surrounded by love.

"Though He brings grief, He will show compassion, so great is His unfailing love." Lamentations 3:32

Next Saturday at 2:00 p.m. is the memorial for Della Mussey's funeral. They are asking for meat and cheese trays as well as donuts as this was Della's favorite to eat. Just finger foods because it will be around 230 or 3 when we have the reception. If anyone is able to help in the kitchen and set it up, SAMS would greatly appreciate it because we are doing the service for her.

The funeral is at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Calhan.

Thanks to all of you

Della May Mussey
May 1, 1935 – November 2, 2025
Mountain View Funeral & Cremation

Della May Mussey was called to her heavenly home on Sunday November 2, 2025 at the age of 90. She is reunited with her departed husband of 48 years, Ted.

Della was born May 1, 1935 to Charles and Bertha Stevens in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. She was blessed in matrimony on May 14, 1955 to Theodore (Ted) Blake Mussey. Ted’s honorable time in the United States Army afforded the couple with the opportunity to reside in many locations both domestically and abroad, all the while growing a family. One such relocation was to Japan where, as Della would quip, she “left with 3 kids and came back with 4.” The characteristic ‘army wife’ would nest in California, rearing their 4 children while Ted was deployed during the Vietnam War. The Musseys would settle in Colorado where Ted would retire from the armed services. In 1977 they would establish permanent residency in Calhan, Colorado.

The family enjoyed visiting the race track on Saturday nights over the summer, particularly during the demolition derby event. Della also excelled at bowling and was quite proud of her trophies. She likewise enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and catching the weeknight broadcast of Jeopardy. Even at age 90 she could best a challenger in a round of Scrabble. Della was a devout member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, attending service each week. One of her stand out interests was collecting all things Santa Claus. She had well over one hundred different Santa figurines and was always excited to add another to the assortment. Not a single Christmas would go by without Della being gifted at least one new piece. She was an adept crocheter, delivering coveted quilts to her grandchildren. Her favorite color was purple. So much so that she would dress in a full purple ensemble for many occasions. It was even a primary factor in her choice for favorite baseball team, selecting the Colorado Rockies to root for.

The Mussey Matriarch will forever be cherished in the memories of her loving family. Della is preceded in death by her husband Ted, brother Charles Stevens, and sister Marguirette (Peg) King. She is survived by sisters Brenda Howe and Grace Barnard, her children: Brenda Presley, Arthur (Lauri) Mussey, David Kent, and Sylvia Hoffstetter, and 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday November 15, 2025 at 2:00pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Calhan, Colorado.

Interment will be Wednesday November 19th, 2025 at 2:00pm at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.

Please wear something purple in remembrance of Della

Phyllis Marie Kauffman passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at the age of 91, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born March 16, 1934, in Decatur, Nebraska to William and GertrudeRichards.

Phyllis attended Craig High School in 1951. She married James Kauffman on May 9, 1963, in Raton, New Mexico. To this union, two daughters were born. Phyllis worked for the Cuming County Courthouse in West Point, Nebraska. After moving to Colorado, she worked for KKTV 11 News, ENT Air Force Base as a secretary for a colonel and for Mervyn’s Department store. Phyllis also attended Blair Business College during that time where she earned secretarial skills.

Phyllis was a long-term member of the VFW post 4051 Ladies Auxiliary in Colorado Springs and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1995.

Her gentle spirit, infectious laughter, and unwavering love left a lasting impression on her family, friends, and community. Always ready with a comforting word or a helping hand—and never one to shy away from an adventure—Phyllis embodied grace and generosity. Her home was always filled with the aroma of her homemade treats—especially her famous pumpkin rolls, which she lovingly shared with everyone she knew. Phyllis found joy in the simple things—birdwatching, exercising, puzzles, cards, bowling, attending Bible study and church, reading and hosting book club, playing games like Rummikub, and spending time with friends and family.

Phyllis is survived by her brother Roland (Mary Ann) Richards; daughters - Jeanette (Blair) Bartling of Calhan, Colorado and Michele (Todd) Hushka of Westminster, Colorado; grandchildren - Jacob (Jennifer) Bartling, Kyle (Courtney) Bartling, Hanna and Logan Hushka; and great-grandchildren - Khloe, Kennedy, Kacie and Karson Bartling, and Matteo Bartling; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband James; her parents William and Gertrude Richards; sisters - Ruby Uman and Loretta Roudon; and brother Gerald Richards.

A devoted mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Phyllis will be missed by all.

A viewing will take place on Monday, June 23, from 5:00–7:00 PM.

A celebration of Phyllis’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Calhan, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Paul Lutheran Church, in her memory.

Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

he leads me beside still waters;

he restores my soul.

He leads me in right paths

for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and staff

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me

all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord

Forever and ever.

4 6

Amen

Lots of Things Going On

Pentecost Sunday, June 8th

In Lutheran tradition, Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles, as described in the Book of Acts. It marks the 50th day after Easter, signifying the culmination of the Easter season and the birthday of the Church. This event is a pivotal moment in Christian history, symbolizing the empowering of believers to share the Gospel with the world. *taken from Trinity Lutheran Radio Club, link follows.

What is Pentecost? – Trinity Lutheran Radio Club

The color red is often used in worship on Pentecost to symbolize the fire of the Holy

Spirit. So remember to wear red! And bring a friend.

Online Streaming Services

Craig Bagenstos has faithfully and consistently videoed and streamed our church services and bible study for years now. He is taking a well deserved break from this service to our church, at least for the summer. His break will include taking a break from leading bible study on Wednesday mornings, as well.

Thank you, Craig, for your dedication to streaming, mowing, and cleaning up communion! We all hope to see you in a pew sometime, so you can worship by our sides. Once again, many thanks and gratitude.

In his absence, we have some helpers to take over, so people can still tune in Sunday mornings. Thanks to Chuck and Alicia, and whomever else steps up to cover this role.

Social Ministry

Social Ministry is hosting Wednesday dinner on June 4th with a hot dog and hamburger cookout. After dinner, for those who stick around, will be board games!

Come on out for a burger or dog, and stay to experience the thrill of competition in a riling game of Yahtzee or Taboo…or whatever board games are brought to share.

Water

We have been gifted a water dispenser of our very own, so the Primo water service that is going away will not leave us parched and at the mercy of municipal treated tap water. When the current water dispenser goes away, it will be replaced and water supplied in five gallon jugs, just as before. The only difference is, we will not have a monthly obligation to pay a service to be delivered.

Out of Office

I will be out of the office June 1-June 8, and June 27-July 4.

Outside of those dates, office hours will resume Tuesday through Friday 9:00am-2:00pm beginning on June 10th and July 8th. I will be able to check email and return phone calls on a limited basis on the days I am out of office.

If I am not physically in the office on a scheduled work day, I will be available via phone or email: 719-313-8076, [email protected].

If you need pastoral care outside of office hours, or when I am away, contact a member of our Synodically Appointed Ministerial Team.

Goings On
Are we talking about Beer and Brats yet?!!

How can I become more involved in Sunday worship service? Glad you asked! There are lots of things you can do, like:

ushering

greeting

setting up, serving, and cleaning communion

ringing the bell during the Lord’s Prayer

lectoring

If any of these jobs sound like something you’re interested in, talk to a church council member or lay minister about how to join in.

Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. During the meal Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples. Christians continue to share bread and wine as part of their worship in church. The Last Supper was probably a Passover meal – the meal which Jewish people share together to celebrate the time when God delivered Moses and the people from slavery in Egypt.

The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane.
