Let's take it phrase by phrase. First, "Enter through the narrow gate." This is a command. Jesus does not say, "Consider the narrow gate when you get a chance." He says enter. This isn’t a spectator sport. You can’t just admire the gate from the parking lot. You have to enter it and go through it.
Second, "wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction." The wide gate and broad road are easy to access. There’s plenty of room. You can bring all your baggage, all your opinions, all your pet sins, and nobody at the wide gate will check. You can move along with the crowd and never make a hard decision. But "destruction" doesn’t mean just a bad day or a rough season. It means ruin. It’s the opposite of life.
