The Noble County Veterans Service Office, the Veterans Service Commission, and the Village of Caldwell are quietly and competently bringing to fruition all the plans for the most anticipated event to be held in Caldwell and Noble County in recent memory.
The Wall That Heals, the replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Mobile Education
Center, will arrive in Caldwell in the area behind the Village of Caldwell Administration Building
Tuesday, October 17. It will be constructed on Wednesday, October 18, and tours will be held From Thursday morning, October 19, at 8:00 a. m. through Sunday, October 22, at 2:00 p. m.
Between 5,000 and 7,000 people are anticipated to visit the wall during its stay in Caldwell. Volunteers will be on hand to help visitors during their tour of the Wall.
“We will be holding an official program for the visit Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., Retired
Major General Edward J. Mechenbrier, who spent nearly six years as a P.O.W in Vietnam, will be the keynote speaker,” stated Joe Williams, Noble County Veterans Service Officer. “Six presenters will speak honoring the Vietnam soldiers from Noble County who gave their last full measure of devotion in that faraway land. Makayla Welch, a young local singer, will perform during the program.”
“We will have food trucks onsite during the visit of the Wall, stated Darrell Crum, Village
Administrator and site coordinator. “On Saturday, the day of the program, the Caldwell Volunteer
Fire Department will be cooking chicken dinners.”
Both Williams and Crum wanted to emphasize the visit of the Wall That Heals is not meant to just honor those who passed away in Vietnam but to serve as a healing process beginning for veterans and their families and friends who were never the same upon returning from Vietnam. “We will also have a mobile veterans center on site for those seeking help or having questions,” continued Williams.
“We are commemorating the visit of the Wall That Heals to Caldwell by naming the area of the soccer field behind the Village Administration Building as the Veterans Memorial Park,” continued Crum. “We are also installing an obelisk shaped War Memorial Monument on Village property in front of the building. A 50-foot flag pole will be put behind the monument.” Crum also added Caldwell Mayor Misty Wells has been distributing flyers advertising the event to all students in the Caldwell, Noble Local, Switzerland of Ohio, Morgan Local, Rolling Hills, East Guernsey, Fort Frye and Waterford School Districts.
Williams and Crum emphasized they are very grateful to the Washington D. C. Team that coordinates all of the travels of The Wall That Heals. They especially mentioned Cathy Miller of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, who is project manager.
