One conversation can change a life. 2 Corinthians 3:18

06/01/2026

06.01.26 Monday Night Bible Study on Prayer
Tonight’s focus: adapted from chapter 32 of Prayer Power, Brent Patrick McDougal
2 Corinthians 3:18
Introduction: One conversation can change a life.
At the age of 14, that happened to me. In our 6th period math class, our new basketball coach challenged me to start praying TODAY to a Christian wife. Walking home after class, I did just that! Two years later, the Lord brought the answer to my prayers in the form of the new preacher’s daughter. My life was altered forever.
The Bible contains many life-changing conversations.
1) On the road to Damascus, Saul saw a blinding light and heard a voice calling to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4). His conversation with Jesus forever changed his life.
2) The woman at the well had a life-changing conversation with Jesus. “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10). Her life was forever changed.
3) Four fishermen had a life-changing conversation with Jesus that started a world-changing movement. “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19).
Through our prayer life, our Savior addresses our will, our wants, our pains/hurts and our hang-ups so that we will be conformed to the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18).
This reference to “unveiled faces” reminds us of Moses and his encounter with God (Exodus 33:11; 34:30). The exchange between Moses and God was life-changing!
More Life-changing conversations
George Muller relayed the story of a young man named Thomas and a wealthy Prussian businessman, Baron von Kamp. The baron helped pay for seminary students to attend seminary. Thomas, looking for a lucrative job, visited the baron who invited him to stay with him for a few days. Thomas was disrespectful even though the baron was kind. Finally, Thomas asked the baron, “How are you able to continue to be so kind to me and serve me like this? The baron replied, “My dear young friend, I have learned it from the Lord Jesus. I wish you would read through the book of John. Good night.” Thomas was so moved that he did just that. Moved by the Scriptures, Thomas became a Christian.
How to Pray More Intimately
Two principles:
1)Talk less. We are invited to come before God with unveiled faces to contemplate his glory and our purpose. Prayer is both contemplating and communicating. Communication with the Holy starts with listening.
2) Listen more. A weakness in our modern-day Christian life is that we end our prayer when we stop talking. We do not give God the opportunity to respond (Jeremiah 33:3).
The story of a conversation between Bod Goff, a motivational speaker, and a Pepperdine University student named John (pp. 220-1).

To What or To Whom am I Devoted? Acts 2:42

05/30/2026

05.31.26 sermon outline
Title: To What or Whom Am I Devoted?
Text: Acts 2:41-42
Sermon in a Sentence: Because these new Christians devoted their lives totally to God, they were used miraculously.
Introduction: On this Trinity Sunday, we witness 3,000 being saved in response to the coming of the Holy Spirit. The second generation of Christians is described in a most uplifting, insightful way in Acts 2:42. Let’s compare our level of commitment to theirs.
I. ”They”= the 3,000 just saved.
A. They became aware that there was much more to life than they realized.
II. “devoted”
A. This is the word from which we get our English word, “vow.” This is an incredible revelation of the new life pattern of the New Testament Christians.
B. What did these new Christians vow themselves? The four-fold foundation or four pillars of the Church.
1) “The apostle’s teaching”= the teachings of Jesus.
Jesus gave a new commandment in John 13:34-35. Love one another of a different kind.
2)”…and to the fellowship”.
A. The book of Acts records the level of devotion that they gave to others. The spirit of God’s people is reflected in Acts 4:32-35.
B. The apostle Paul caught the same spirit as he wrote in Philippians 2:1-5.
3)”…the breaking of bread…”
A .First, we recognize that a large percentage of the new Christians were slaves.
B. Second, since Holy Communion was usually observed at the end of a meal, it was a call to remember Jesus and a reminder of our commitment.
4) “…and to prayer”
A. These disciples learned as we need to relearn that prayer connects us to God.
B. Once we devote ourselves to prayer, a new world opens to us.
Conclusion: Because the 2nd generation Christians focused primarily on faith rather than fear, they became world-changers. May we be as faithful and focused.

A Stronghold in Time of Trouble. Nahum 1:7

05/24/2026

05.25.26 Monday Night Bible Study on Prayer
Tonight’s focus: A Stronghold in Time of Trouble
“The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.” Nahum 1:7
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand will save me.” Psalm 138:7
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not over-flow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.” Isaiah 43:2
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:3,4
Introduction: Alphonso’s story. Around 1980, Alphonso started a church in Haiti with grand dreams. After several years of hard work, no one would come to worship. So, he felt defeated and did not know what to do. But he noticed that many children came to see him with great needs. Alphonso began to serve them. He built a school and provided school uniforms and food. That led to starting a medical clinic and then a hospital. Finally, he was able to build a sanctuary for worship.
In 2010, a massive earthquake rocked Haiti, killing 200,000 people and leveling every one of his buildings. Fortunately, the children were at recess playing soccer. So, the children were not hurt. Alphonso was distraught at the extensive damage. He prayed to the Lord, “God, it took 34 years to build these buildings, but it only took 34 seconds to bring them all down. I’m done!”
He made plans to relocate to Florida with extended family. But one child came up to him and asked, “Pastor Alphonso, who will care for us if you leave?” He believed that was a message from God and decided to stay. He was able to raise the funds to rebuild the school and a little sanctuary. He took in children who were left orphans by the earthquake.
“Can you imagine the crisis of faith that might come if everything you had worked for was torn down in a minute?” Prayer Power, p. 82.
Or, if you lost your only child in an accident? Or, if you lost a spouse or a parent? Or you found yourself facing financial ruin?
“When we experience difficult circumstances, we may struggle to believe in God’s consistent goodness. Life can knock the breath out of us.” Ibid. p.83.
Amid Alphonso’s pain, he still listened for God to speak to him: and he obeyed! So, God brought good from tragedy. Someone said, “Your decisions are the hinges on which your destiny hangs.”
French philosopher Albert Camus wrote, “Life is the sum of all your choices.”
In your pain, God knows where you are and will move, sometimes miraculously, to bring an answer to your prayers. A promise to lean on= Philippians 4:6,7.
Someone said, “The undecided look for escape; the committed search for solutions.”
“Those who leave everything in God’s hand will eventually see God’s hand in everything.”
“The unwounded life bears no resemblance to Jesus.”
The story of Armando Valladares in his book, Against All Hope. This is a good book to read when you think that you have lost all hope. He was imprisoned and tortured for 8,000 days for refusing to put a pro-Castro sign on his desk at work.
The world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.
“Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.” Psalm 39:7
The Christian can celebrate this prayer principle: “God’s goodness will follow you all the days of your life.” Ibid. p.86.

Jesus’ Disciples: The Product of Priorities. Acts 2:1-21

05/23/2026

Made for a Mission. James 1:2-8

05/23/2026

Pentecost Sunday Sermon 5.24.26
Jesus’s Disciples: The Product of Priorities
Acts 2:1-21
Sermon in a Sentence: When the disciples changed their priorities, they changed the world.
Introduction: What happened, in the disciples’ hearts, when they perceived that Jesus was the Messiah?
I. They saw the world 180 degrees differently!
A. The political power for which they so deeply hungered, disappeared.
In its place, a different hunger grew…
a hunger to follow the example of Jesus wherever it may lead.
II. This opened the door for Pentecost.
Life-Lesson
Our priorities are revealed in our life choices.
A. Heretofore, the disciples had followed the priorities of the
religious leaders not realizing that it was no more than a good
“head-fake”. Because they were in collaboration with Rome.
B. Jesus saw their true colors and spoke against them and was
killed for it.
III. But when the disciples saw the Lord in his resurrected body,
their hearts were transformed and radically shifted their priorities.
A.50 days later, God sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
B. From 30 A.D. to 367 A.D., where did the disciples get their guidance? The Holy Spirit. (John 16:13).
The New Testament was canonized in 367A.D.

C. The Holy Spirit is just as real and involved in our lives today as
it was during the days of the 1st century Church. The book of Acts
is powerful evidence of the guidance that the Holy Spirit offers.

Life-Lesson
Priorities become the rudder of my life.
“We become what we behold.” Michael Williams

Conclusion: Like the disciples, may we too be found faithful, hungering enthusiastically for the Holy and serving our Lord with delight no matter the cost.
