Facebook suggested I add business hours that the cemetery is open so that people can plan their visits. So, how about "daily dawn to dusk"? πŸ™‚

Two projects were completed this weekend. One was digging out a ditch and installing a metal culvert in the frontage ditch. The neighbor wanted to connect his driveway culvert with ours to fill in and level the frontage ditch to make it attractive and easy to mow. It was done and covered with earth. So now there is about 100 feet of ditch at the cemetery road frontage that is level with the road. No more unsightly weeds, brambles and stagnant ditch water!😟

Also some family members replaced horizontal bars in the chain link fence surrounding the cemetery. Just a few pieces were pretty rusted but they decided to replace everything all the way around and it looks far more attractive now!

This little cemetery is very typical of family plots in rural areas, with many abandoned and hidden long ago in neglected fields and deep woods. There are at least four such plots on the Huddleston farm or immediately adjacent. This one is associated with the Huddleston family on farmland they owned. Other families are represented here and they work together to keep the cemetery open, active, maintained and accessible to all. Gravestones have been repaired and stabilized, the grounds kept mowed and the entry lane graveled and passable. A stone bench was built under the large cedar tree during the summer. One family set a memorial redbud tree with a large decorative stone after the loss of a child last year. We continue to pursue ideas to beautify to property and keep it going far into the future.

Recently two individuals with family members buried at the cemetery donated funds to help with the on-going cemetery maintenance. We are grateful for the donations and the willingness of family to contribute funds. Over the past couple of years a few people have inquired about how to make a donation. The cemetery property is held in trust under the Huddleston Family Cemetery Trust. It is governed by a group of trustees. The trustees oversee all funds held for the cemetery which are in an investment account in the name of the Trust.

Anyone wishing to donate may submit it to any of the trustees who can deposit it into the investment account. Checks should be made out to the Huddleston Family Cemetery Trust. The current trustees are Katreece McGrath, Wendy Falconberry and Edna McKnight. Other contact points include Dennis or Glynda Falconberry or Raymond Estes. We appreciate your interest as we work to continue upkeep and improvement of the cemetery property. More information and new pictures will be published soon!

Branden and Kaden McGrath, Edwin McKnight and Dennis and Glynda Falconberry did some maintenance work at the cemetery today. With the help of Edwin's tractor front-end loader, we re-graveled a washed section of the entry drive and placed more dirt over the metal culvert where the pipe had become exposed. The McGraths are mowing this month and the grounds really look sharp.

Also, Edwin and Dennis took some rock from the limestone bluff on the hill above the cemetery, and built a stone bench under the cedar tree. It is functional (really!) and helps add to the attractiveness of the property.

The pics include the memorial redbud tree planted by the Shaver family last year. We learned today the new family next to the property (Farley's) had looked after and kept the tree watered when it was looking a bit thirsty (many thanks!!) Soon we hope to plant a dogwood from the Falconberry's. One of the family has a small dogwood in their backyard that came from their old homestead in Kentucky. They are selling the house and want to keep the dogwood. So we have dug a hole for it in the cemetery and hope to have it transplanted soon.

On Saturday morning June 10 at 8:00 we will meet at the cemetery to perform some minor repair to the gravel lane. The lane has a small rut near the road, and a few other places that have washed slightly. We will use some gravel from across the road to fill these places and rake it out to smooth. We may also move some dirt from the dirt pile to recover the culvert where the top has become exposed due to rain.

The Falconberrys want to translpant a small dogwood tree from Nashville to the cemetery. The tree was dug from the old homestead in Kentucky. The house in Nashville is being sold and the family wants to preserve the tree in the cemetery. A hole has already been dug inside the front right corner of the fence. It is hoped the tree can be transplanted on June 10.

Springtime greetings from the Huddleston Family Cemetery!
We are again soliciting volunteers to help with groundskeeping in 2017 as in years past. If you are willing to help by taking a month please send a message via this page or to Glynda Falconberry. April is already covered but any other month from May through September is available.

There is an alternative to providing your own time and mowing equipment. A local groundskeeper is available who will provide a professional-looking mowing and trimming at $50 per visit, He mowed and trimmed last year at the end of the growing season and the results looked great. His fee is very reasonable considering the amount of work and headstone trimming involved, and he mows only as requested. We already have committments to use his services for two months including April. If you want to assist by chipping in to use his service please just let us know; you may text or message. Certainly if you want to continue bringing your own equipment that will be fine.

Dennis Falconberry visited the cemetery several times during the winter and early spring. The grounds and gravel lane are in good shape thanks largely to the family help of the past couple of years. There is only minor rutting in the lane which can be repaired with a front-end load of gravel and some raking. There appears to be no major grounds or headstones work to be done beyond the start of mowing. As a result we will not plan a cemetery get-together until early May when we are firmly into warm weather. At that time we can work mostly on re-graveling ruts in the lane. An announcement will be posted later in April about a Saturday in May.

Our mowing schedule for 2016 thus far is:
April - Dennis Falconberry
May - Terry McCulloch
June - Raymond Estes
July - Brandon McGrath
August - Mike Huddleston

Let me know if I got anything out of order or misspelled- it can happen!😊

And hope for rain; if it doesn't soon we may all be mowing just one time in our respective months!☹️

Kudos to Edwin McKnight for bringing his tractor and implements to finish covering and smoothing over the drainage pipes along the road! It looks terrific and will greatly aid mowing and overall appearance. Edwin used all the earth pile nearest the road and much of the pile next to the cemetery fence. We have begun strawing and sowing to prevent erosion; it should be completed this week.

A beautiful (but windy) work day at our family cemetery yesterday. We did our first mowing and trimming for 2016. The main action was installing 70' of drainage ditch pipe along the road frontage. We began covering it with soil from a nearby dirt pile; once done and smoothed out we can mow right to the road's edge and eliminate the unsightly summertime weedy ditch growth. And finally, the fields around the cemetery grounds were mowed to help improve the overall appearance.

A mowing schedule was set up for this year, currently we are covered through July (thanks volunteers!) We appreciate two of our younger family members stepping up to serve as trustees under the governing trust agreement. It was a blessed day to come together with family (and the neighbor's dogs πŸ™‚)and accomplish so much!

Hello everyone! Just sending a reminder about our 2016 Spring Kick-off at the family cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday April 2. We will have our first mowing and general maintenance/clean-up. We are still working out the arrangement to have culvert pipes installed in the ditch on both sides of the lane this week. We want to use the two mounds of dirt on the property to cover the pipes and level the property frontage enough to make it easier to mow and trim. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Our page is emerging from its winter slumber and preparing to greet spring! We hope you all had a grand winter with the seasonal holidays and, just maybe, enjoyed a snow day or two. With the warming temperatures soon upon us, here are some events and plans for our family cemetery for 2016.

Spring kick-off on Saturday April 2: We will meet at the cemetery at 10:00 for our first mowing and clean-up of 2016. A visit there last week indicates the cemetery and surrounding property are in good shape. The gravel lane has not washed out with the winter rains, so re-graveling will be minimal. The message board postings are all intact. The board will soon be encased with a sturdy clear cover to better protect the posted materials from the elements.

This week corrugated culvert pipe is being delivered for the open ditch along the road frontage. Cost of the pipe is being covered by several family members. The plan is to connect the pipe for a nearly 100’ stretch – the length of the cemetery road frontage – and cover it with earth to enable mowing of the property to the road’s edge. This will help improve mowing along the road and eliminate the unsightly vegetation growth in the ditch during warm weather.

We also are excited to announce a change in oversight of the trust that owns the cemetery property. The current trustees will be succeeded by a new group of trustees to continue carrying forward the responsibilities of the trust. The new trustees will be a younger group whom we are confident will help keep our cemetery maintained and attractive for many years to come. We are grateful for their willingness to take on this responsibility. The replacement trustees and revision of the trust agreement will be announced at the April 2 get-together.

When we meet on April 2, our duties will include the first spring mowing, filling in of low spots and straightening or leveling grave markers as needed. As noted earlier lane re-graveling should be minimal. We may trim some of the low branches on the cedar tree which will greatly benefit mowing directly beneath the tree. Of course, our greatest need for the coming year will be volunteers for mowing and trimming. We solicit your help in picking up a period during the year for mowing as we did in 2015.

The culvert pipe installation should be our last major improvement for the foreseeable future. Other maintenance to consider at a later time is replacement of rusted sections of the horizontal tubing in the chain-link fence and planting of some trees near the entry gate. We are also considering enhancing our page by adding a web site link to post documents such as the cemetery map, family history, genealogies, etc., which is not easily done in Facebook.

As always, our most grateful appreciation for your interest and involvement in keeping our little cemetery operational and attractive.

Many thanks to all who participated last Saturday, and also to everyone who supported the upkeep this year financially and by volunteering their time and equipment to mow and complete the final installation of the fence. It was wonderful seeing families come together for a shared work. Our best wishes to everyone for the year-end holiday season and a great 2016!
