An Important Winter Weather Update from Dr. Thurman - Wednesday, January 8, 2025
Dear Panther Families,
The anticipation and excitement surrounding the first snowfall of the season are truly special. It's heartwarming to see the joy on the faces of our students—and even many of our adults—when the snow starts to fall. However, with winter weather comes the reality that we must make important decisions regarding school closures or delays. These decisions are never easy, and we understand that there are always varying opinions on the best course of action.
Please know that I am committed to making the best decision possible based on the most current and reliable information from weather professionals. We fully understand that school closures, early dismissals, or delays can be disruptive for families, but my primary concern is always the safety of our students and staff.
While many assume that decisions are based solely on the ability of our 89 buses to safely transport students, it’s important to consider several factors. This includes ensuring that staff and student drivers can travel safely, as well as the ability of everyone to navigate sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways once snow accumulation begins.
With this in mind, I want to share some key information regarding the forecast. Friday, according to weather professionals, will not be a day for safe travel. I strongly recommend that parents plan for a district closure on Friday. For Thursday, however, the forecast remains uncertain. Snow is expected to enter our area mid-afternoon, but there is still some uncertainty around the timing of "mid-afternoon." If we are not able to receive a more definitive timeline for when accumulation will start in our area, we will err on the side of caution and make a decision accordingly.
I will be providing an update on Thursday’s plan later this afternoon. At this moment, my recommendation is to have a contingency plan in place for Thursday in case we decide to close, and to be fully prepared for a Friday closure.
I appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these weather challenges. Please rest assured that all decisions will be made with the utmost care for the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community.
