She comes to Jesus with a request.

A Canaanite woman.
An outsider.
A mother who refuses to give up.

The disciples want her to go away.

But she stays.

She speaks.
She persists.
She challenges.

Jesus tells her that his mission is first to the people of Israel.

And she pushes back.

"Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

She will not accept that God's mercy has a limited table.

And Jesus recognizes her faith.

What strikes me about this woman is not her helplessness.

It is her courage.

She knows what she needs.
She knows who she is fighting for.
And she refuses to let anyone convince her that she doesn't belong.

Her faith has a voice.

Maybe that's part of the Gospel's invitation to us:

Faith isn't always quiet.

Sometimes faith speaks up.
Sometimes faith persists.
Sometimes faith asks us to widen the table.

At Saint Anne, we believe there is room at that table for all of us.

Different stories.
Different struggles.
Different ways of seeing the world.

And sometimes the people who challenge us to make more room are the very people who help us see God's love more clearly.

This week, perhaps the invitation is simple:

Be courageous enough to speak.

Be humble enough to listen.

And keep making the table bigger.

The disciples are out on the water.

The wind is strong.
The waves are rough.
And they are afraid.

Then they see Jesus walking toward them on the water.

But they don't recognize him.

"Take courage," Jesus says.
"It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter steps out of the boat.

For a moment, he walks on the water.

Then he notices the wind.

He gets scared.
He starts to sink.

And Jesus reaches out his hand.

We often think faith means not being afraid.

But Peter is afraid.

The disciples are afraid.

And Jesus doesn't wait for their fear to disappear before coming toward them.

Maybe faith is less about having no fear
and more about knowing where to reach when fear comes.

We will all have storms.

Moments when the ground doesn't feel steady.
Moments when we doubt ourselves.
Moments when we wonder if we're going to make it through.

And still, Christ comes toward us.

This week, perhaps the invitation is simple:

When the water gets rough,
don't be afraid to reach out.

And when someone else is sinking,
be the hand that reaches back.
