Stolen beehives!?

Did you know the Sanctuary is home to over three dozen honey bee hives? Yesterday’s warm temperatures brought the bees out in full force while they took their potty flights and foraged for resources. Since there aren’t any plants in bloom at the moment, several bees found their way to our chicken feeders. If you look closely, you can see them rolling around in the feed. It’s no cause for alarm. In fact, this is a good sign! 💕

We feed our bees a sugar substance over the winter to ensure they have enough calories to make it through the coldest months, but that only takes care of the adult bees. In addition to honey, bees make a pollen-based substance high in protein called “bee bread.” Bee bread is fed to bee larvae and newly emerged bees for growth and development. Chicken feed is a great source of protein and minerals when flowers aren’t in bloom. These bees mean no harm to our birdies. They’re collecting valuable resources to feed to their babies. This is a sure sign the hive is healthy and their queen is doing well. 👑
