What We Learned This Week in Jump Start

Jesus’ Baptism and Temptation (Matthew 3:13–17, 4:1–17; John 1:29–34)
Brite Idea: Jesus is God’s Son.

John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the Messiah. When Jesus asked to be baptized by him, John hesitated, but Jesus explained it was part of God’s plan. After Jesus’ baptism, the Spirit of God descended on Him, and a voice from heaven declared Him as God’s beloved Son. John later identified Jesus as the Lamb of God, the One who would take away the sin of the world. Jesus then resisted temptation in the wilderness before starting His ministry.

Jesus didn’t need to repent and be baptized because He has never sinned, but He set an example for us. Since Jesus is fully human, He did everything He wanted us to do. Jesus was tempted like we are, but He never did anything wrong. Hebrews 2:17 says that Jesus had to be made like us in every way so that He could be the perfect sacrifice for our sin. That’s why Jesus, the Son of God, came to Earth. Jesus came as a person so He could make a way for us to be forgiven and live with Him forever through His death on the cross and His resurrection.

Monthly Memory Verse: But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31)

What We Learned This Week in Jump Start

John the Baptist (Matthew 3:1–12; Luke 3:1–18)
Brite Idea: Jesus is greater than any person.

Before Jesus was born, an angel told Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth would have a son named John. John would prepare the people for the coming Messiah and fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah. John grew up in the wilderness, preached repentance and baptized people in the Jordan River. He rebuked religious leaders for relying on tradition instead of true repentance. When people wondered if he was the Messiah, John said the true Messiah was coming, one mightier than him, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Later in His ministry, Jesus would say that there was no greater man who had ever been born than John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11). Even as great as John was, he knew that Jesus was greater. John’s birth was a miracle, but Jesus’ birth was even more miraculous. John prepared the way for the Messiah, but Jesus was the Messiah. John could baptize people and call them to turn to God, but only Jesus could truly forgive sins and make people new. Jesus is greater than any other person!

Monthly Memory Verse: But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31)

This Month’s Attribute of God Is: Jesus is the Son of God
At Jesus’ baptism, God declared Jesus His beloved Son. Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations and proved His divine authority. People recognized Jesus’ power and chose to follow Him. Jesus calmed creation and cast out demons with only His words. His words and miracles showed that Jesus was not just a teacher, but truly the Son of God.

Monthly Memory Verse: But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31)

What We Learned This Week in Jump Start

Jesus is Born! (Luke 2:1-21)
Brite Idea: The promised Savior was born.
This Month’s Biblical Theme: God is a promise keeper.

The promised Savior is here! Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, and Mary gave birth to a baby boy. A large group of angels appeared to shepherds and announced that Jesus had been born. They said that this was good news of great joy. Jesus was the Savior. After the angels went away, the shepherds rushed to see the baby. They praised God for all He had done and shared what they had seen and heard. Mary treasured all of these things in her heart.

Why would the birth of a baby be good news of great joy for all people? The angels said the Savior was born. Baby Jesus would grow up and make a way, through His death on the cross, for us to have a relationship with God forever. That relationship with God is broken because of our sin, and there is nothing that we can do to fix it on our own. God loves us so much that He sent His Son to Earth to take the punishment for our sin. He gives us the gift of salvation and living forever with God. That gift is better than anything in the whole world. Because we always have Him, we can always have joy. Jesus brings great joy because we know He redeems us, and one day will restore all things to be new again.

Monthly Memory Verse: For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

Navigating a Broken World - Negative News Media

Our culture thrives on 24/7 news coverage. Even if your kids aren’t watching the news, other adults in their world likely are. Unfortunately, today’s culture emphasizes negative news reports. All of this negativity can paint a very hopeless picture for kids. Some kids feel hopeless about our world or feel there is no good news. This week in Brite, kids will learn Mary and Joseph received news that would have definitely been scary. However, that scary news brought hope into our dark world. Evaluate how much negative news outlets your kids are exposed to. Hearing scary things on repeat is not healthy. When kids talk about scary events in the world, have honest conversations and also encourage them to focus on the good news that Jesus brings us. One day He will fix our broken world.

Here’s how we discussed this topic and how you can discuss it at home:

Discuss: Have you ever heard someone say, “Everything just seems hopeless!?” What caused them to say that?

Discuss: Does the news or social media usually talk about hopeful things or negative things? What are some examples?

What you can Say: All of the negative news we see on TV or on social media can make us feel like life really is hopeless. The good news is that we aren’t trusting in the world for our hope. The hope God gives us through Jesus is greater than anything this world could give us. Yes, the news is full of bad things happening in the world, but God gives us hope! We know that He is in control. We know that He has given us a way to live forever with Him, and that one day, all of the sickness, violence and terrible things in the news will be gone. He will make all things new!

What We Learned This Week in Jump Start

Mary and Joseph (Matthew 1:18–25; Luke 1:26–38)
Brite Idea: Jesus is the Messiah.
This Month’s Biblical Theme: God is a promise keeper.

An angel appeared to Mary, a young woman engaged to Joseph. He told her she would conceive a Son, Jesus. Jesus would be the Son of God and reign forever. When Joseph learned of Mary's pregnancy, he considered breaking off the engagement, but an angel appeared to him in a dream, confirming the Child was from God and that Jesus would save the people from their sins. Jesus was the promised Messiah!

The angel told both Mary and Joseph important things about who Jesus would be. Jesus would be the Son of God, He would rule forever, and He would forgive people of their sins. All of these descriptions pointed towards the Messiah. The name “Jesus” literally means “God is salvation.” Even Jesus’ name showed that He was the Messiah God had promised His people. God’s people had waited for hope and God was keeping His promise. Jesus would be the Messiah—the Savior who would rescue all people from sin.

Monthly Memory Verse: For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
