It has become very common for us in the west to call him doubting Thomas. But this is the believing Thomas. It is not Thomas who wrestles with the claims of Jesus and what he hears as the witnesses of those who have seen, but that Thomas wants to reconnect and touch his Lord. He wants to be able to put his fingers in the place of our Lord's death. He wants to see how far the light has gone into the depth and the darkness.

He wants connection.

Joseph tells his brothers that God had orchestrated the entire circumstance of his life. God had allowed him to be put into slavery. God had allowed him to go into the pit. God had allowed him to suffer. God had allowed all of this to prepare for his family salvation. To be able to feed his beloved father and his beloved brothers.

The light of Christ shines forth in the light of Joseph. Not just in the God-given ability to forgive, but think about the entire shape of Joseph's life. It is the crucifixion pattern of Jesus.
