There comes a moment when we reach the end of our lives that we must pass the baton to the next generation. The question becomes for us -- how do we finish well? How do we live our lives faithfully to God, and then prepare the next generation to continue being faithful after us? The story of Abraham ends with these thoughts in mind and with him preparing for his son Isaac to carry the mantle of faith forward into the future. And it guides us into considering how we can do the same with those who come after us.

Throughout Scripture Jesus sees people who are hurting and in need, and he shows compassion and care. He does not just proclaim Good News, but brings healing and hope to them. And then he turns toward those people who would seek to be his followers and tells them that they are being sent into the world to do the same -- bring healing and hope in his name. We are called to engage the world in his name and to point people to him.

Life pulls us in many directions, and even good things can leave us distracted, anxious, and spiritually thin. And there is a danger in doing that, because it prevents us from living an active and vibrant faith.

In Luke 10:38–42, Jesus lovingly calls Martha — and us — back to the one thing necessary: giving our attention to Him. Jesus invites us to become more deeply rooted as individuals and as a church by learning to serve, live, and love from a place of abiding with Him.
