A Sure Word for Perilous Days
From a classic message by Dr. Harold B. Sightler
We are living in uncertain days.
Morality shifts. Culture changes. Institutions fail. Nations tremble. Men lose confidence in things they once thought could never be moved.
But the child of God does not have to build his life upon something that changes with every generation.
We have a sure Word.
Dr. Harold Sightler looked to the life of Daniel—a young man carried away from everything familiar, surrounded by paganism, separated from home, family, and the worship he had known—and yet Daniel remained faithful.
Everything around Daniel changed.
But Daniel’s God did not.
From the book of Daniel, Dr. Sightler pointed to three great truths upon which a believer can anchor his life in perilous days.
1. THERE IS A GOD
📖 ”…there is a God in heaven…” — Daniel 2:28
Daniel stood before the most powerful king of his day and reminded him of something Babylon could never change:
There is a God in heaven.
Governments rise and fall. Economies strengthen and collapse. Human philosophies come and go. Generations change.
But God remains.
He is still Almighty.
He is still all-knowing.
He is still sovereign over His creation.
He is still faithful to His Word.
Dr. Sightler declared:
“There has never been a day when God has not been, and there shall never be a day when He shall not be.”
That is still true today.
2. THERE IS A MAN
📖 “There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods…” — Daniel 5:11
When Babylon’s wise men had no answer, somebody remembered Daniel.
There was still a man who knew God.
Elijah once believed he stood alone, but God reminded him that thousands had not bowed the knee to Baal.
The devil would have us believe nobody stands anymore.
Nobody believes the old Book.
Nobody wants old-fashioned preaching.
Nobody wants holiness.
Nobody will remain faithful.
Don’t believe it.
God has always had somebody.
And instead of asking where that man is, every believer ought to ask:
Could I be that man? Could I be that woman?
Dr. Sightler said:
“I want to be that man. I don’t want God to have to get a substitute for me.”
May that be our prayer.
3. THERE IS A TIME
📖 “And at that time shall Michael stand up…” — Daniel 12:1
History is not spinning helplessly out of control.
God has a timetable.
There is a coming tribulation.
There is a resurrection.
There is judgment.
There is reward.
There is a consummation of everything God has promised.
Nothing happening in this world can cancel God’s schedule.
The church is not simply winding down.
God is winding His program up.
Every promise will be fulfilled. Every prophecy will reach its appointed hour. Every faithful work done for Christ will be remembered.
So what do we do in perilous days?
We don’t panic.
We don’t compromise.
We don’t abandon the old paths.
We anchor ourselves to what cannot move.
There is a God.
There is a man.
There is a time.
And through it all, there remains a sure Word from God.
📖 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” — Matthew 24:35
When everything around you seems uncertain, plant your feet deeper in the Word of God.
The days may be perilous.
The Word is still sure.
