POWER IN IMPORTUNATE PRAYER
November 14, 2025

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Philippians 4:6

Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His experience testifies to the power of importunate prayer. It is now that we are to learn this lesson of prevailing prayer, of unyielding faith.

The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian, are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth, or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power.

Those who are unwilling to forsake every sin and to seek earnestly for God’s blessing, will not obtain it. But all who will lay hold of God’s promises as did Jacob, and be as earnest and persevering as he was, will succeed as he succeeded.

Defense in a Sticky Situation
By Denielle Babb | November 14

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
1 Peter 5:8

While sitting in the living room one afternoon, I watched as a lonely wasp flew back and forth across the length of the ceiling. I didn’t know how it got in, but it did; and now it paced the house as if searching to find some way out. I’ve never been a big fan of wasps, but somehow, I could relate with this one. It repeatedly ran into walls and windows before eventually finding itself caught in the midst of a spider web, discreetly hidden in the corner of the room.

The wasp tried desperately to free itself from the web, to no avail; and soon, it faced a bigger problem. A spider, lurking in the corner, sprang into action, racing toward the struggling wasp in hopes of securing its next meal.

In defense, the wasp thrust its stinger toward the spider, and for a moment, the spider stepped back; then it just moved to a different angle. Again the wasp thrust its stinger, and again the spider moved. Over and over, the same thing occurred. I watched this miniature battle as it played out in my home; however, after several minutes, I stopped watching. When I finally returned to check on the battle, I noticed the wasp had managed to escape and was flying around the room again. As for the spider, he’d lost out on that meal.

In witnessing this conflict between the wasp and the spider, I realized something. I’m a lot like that wasp. Sometimes I find myself in situations in which I shouldn’t be, and it doesn’t take long before I walk right into one of Satan’s traps. But, praise the Lord, I have a defense! Just as the wasp used his stinger as a defense, so God is my defense against the snares of Satan. Just as Jesus quoted Scripture when tempted in the desert, we can claim God’s promises and gain strength and victory over temptation.

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

The Great White Throne

The Peacock Throne is considered one of the most luxurious thrones ever built. It served as the seat of the emperors of the Golden Age of the Mughal Empire in India. The jeweled chair was commissioned by Shah Jahan and located in the equally stunning Red Fort of Delhi.

In the last great judgment of the wicked, John sees a “great white throne,” one not noted by jewels or ivory. Thrones are spoken of 37 times in Revelation and emphasize royal power and authority. In today’s passage, Christ is seated on the throne to execute the final righteous judgment (thus, the color white) against the wicked.

Though Satan has been called the “ruler of this world” (John 12:31), here he is about to “be cast out” and destroyed. Jesus has been crowned as the King of kings and is seated on a throne showing His rightful position as ruler of the earth. For the believer, God’s throne has been a source of mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:16), but for the unbeliever, it brings terror. All created beings behold this final judgment. “There was found no place for” the wicked to hide from the eyes of God.

Judgment, we learned in Revelation 14, has been taking place in heaven since 1844. At this point, it has already been determined who has been saved and who is lost. The great white throne judgment is, therefore, administrative and will carry out the punishment of the wicked.

The reference to heaven and earth fleeing away reminds us that the old order of this sinful world will change. “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You will endure; yes, they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed” (Psalm 102:25, 26).

What a great day it will be when sin is finally put to an end!

Heavenly Father, I pray for the day in which You will make all things new. Please make my heart new today.

Daily Devotional

The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17

Our Daily Bread

Devotional Compiled From the Writings of Ellen White
November 14
And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that have provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God's commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. It will be declared that men are offending God by the violation of the Sunday sabbath; that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced; and that those who present the claims of the fourth commandment, thus destroying reverence for Sunday, are troublers of the people, preventing their restoration to divine favor and temporal prosperity. Thus the accusation urged of old against the servant of God will be repeated and upon grounds equally well established: “And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.” 1 Kings 18:17, 18. As the wrath of the people shall be excited by false charges, they will pursue a course toward God's ambassadors very similar to that which apostate Israel pursued toward Elijah.

The miracle-working power manifested through spiritualism will exert its influence against those who choose to obey God rather than men. Communications from the spirits will declare that God has sent them to convince the rejecters of Sunday of their error, affirming that the laws of the land should be obeyed as the law of God. They will lament the great wickedness in the world and second the testimony of religious teachers that the degraded state of morals is caused by the desecration of Sunday. Great will be the indignation excited against all who refuse to accept their testimony.

Satan's policy in this final conflict with God's people is the same that he employed in the opening of the great controversy in heaven. He professed to be seeking to promote the stability of the divine government, while secretly bending every effort to secure its overthrow. And the very work which he was thus endeavoring to accomplish he charged upon the loyal angels. The same policy of deception has marked the history of the Roman Church. It has professed to act as the vicegerent of Heaven, while seeking to exalt itself above God and to change His law. Under the rule of Rome, those who suffered death for their fidelity to the gospel were denounced as evildoers; they were declared to be in league with Satan; and every possible means was employed to cover them with reproach, to cause them to appear in the eyes of the people and even to themselves as the vilest of criminals. So it will be now. While Satan seeks to destroy those who honor God's law, he will cause them to be accused as lawbreakers, as men who are dishonoring God and bringing judgments upon the world.

God never forces the will or the conscience; but Satan's constant resort—to gain control of those whom he cannot otherwise seduce—is compulsion by cruelty. Through fear or force he endeavors to rule the conscience and to secure homage to himself. To accomplish this, he works through both religious and secular authorities, moving them to the enforcement of human laws in defiance of the law of God.

Those who honor the Bible Sabbath will be denounced as enemies of law and order, as breaking down the moral restraints of society, causing anarchy and corruption, and calling down the judgments of God upon the earth. Their conscientious scruples will be pronounced obstinacy, stubbornness, and contempt of authority. They will be accused of disaffection toward the government. Ministers who deny the obligation of the divine law will present from the pulpit the duty of yielding obedience to the civil authorities as ordained of God. In legislative halls and courts of justice, commandment keepers will be misrepresented and condemned. A false coloring will be given to their words; the worst construction will be put upon their motives. GC 592.1
As the Protestant churches reject the clear, Scriptural arguments in defense of God's law, they will long to silence those whose faith they cannot overthrow by the Bible. Though they blind their own eyes to the fact, they are now adopting a course which will lead to the persecution of those who conscientiously refuse to do what the rest of the Christian world are doing, and acknowledge the claims of the papal sabbath.

The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet's words: “The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17. Verse of the Day
James 3:13
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
Commentary:

“Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.” My brethren and sisters, how are you employing the gift of speech? Have you learned so to control the tongue that it shall ever obey the dictates of an enlightened conscience and holy affections? Is your conversation free from levity, pride and malice, deceit and impurity? Are you without guile before God? Words exert a telling power. Satan will, if possible, keep the tongue active in his service. Of ourselves we cannot control the unruly member. Divine grace is our only hope. 5T 175.1

Every person has been placed on trial, as were Adam and Eve in Eden. As the tree of knowledge was placed in the midst of the Garden of Eden, so the Sabbath command is placed in the midst of the Decalogue. In regard to the fruit of the tree of knowledge, the restriction was made, Ye shall not eat of it. …. lest ye die. Of the Sabbath, God said, Ye shall not defile it, but keep it holy. … As the tree of knowledge was the test of Adam’s obedience, so the fourth commandment is the test that God has given to prove the loyalty of all His people. The experience of Adam is to be a warning to us so long as time shall last. It warns us not to receive any assurance from the mouths of mortals or of angels that will detract one jot or tittle from the sacred law of Jehovah. (Review and Harold, August 30, 1898.)

A Fishing Disaster
By Deborah Shaffer | November 12

“That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the [a]saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV)

After a morning rain, I ventured outside to check out our newly planted garden. Along the way I began to notice the worms crawling on the driveway, on the porch, and especially around the swimming pool. Since the storm had passed, I decided it was a perfect time to grab some of these slimy babies and head down to the pond.

Now, normally, I use chicken livers to entice the catfish. Today, however, I was going to use these worms to try my luck with bass or maybe bluegill. Just seconds after casting my line, I had my first fish; a bluegill. Within minutes, I had caught a bass, and then another. Excitement was building. I grabbed up more of those wiggly, obviously enticing critters, replenished the hook, and drew back for another cast.

And then it happened. As the bait hit the water and sunk, my reel fell to the ground in pieces! My line was out, but I had no way of pulling in any fish. I had been in such a hurry to go fishing that I had failed to inspect my equipment, which had gotten rusty and loose. As a fisherman, I was useless.

Jesus told us to be “fishers of men.” We are to share the gospel with a lost and hungry world with love and compassion. But how can we do that if we’re not properly equipped? How can Christ's love flow from us if we, ourselves, are empty?

Maybe it’s time for an equipment check. We need to go back to the basics—repentance, God’s Word, and prayer. We need to get love from the source of love, Jesus Christ. We need to ask God to fill us with His love so we can love others. It’s time to inspect our lives, get things in proper working order, and run back to the pond to begin again!
