Psalm 51 expresses one of the clearest examples of repentance in all of Scripture. Countless broken sinners have found in these words a perfect expression of their need for God’s mercy and forgiveness. Psalm 51 begins with David’s plea for forgiveness after his moral failure. It teaches that genuine repentance hinges on appealing to God’s character and grace rather than our own merit, acknowledging the severity of our sins, and trusting entirely in His power to completely remove our spiritual guilt.

All things in the created order have one thing in common: we are all defined as creatures by change. That’s what the difference is between us and God. He never changes. God is immutable in his being and character and therefore is not in the process of becoming something different from what He is. I AM WHO I AM. God is self-existent and, therefore, not dependent on anything else for His own existence. He alone has being in and of Himself. God is eternal in His existence. He is the creator and sustainer of all that exists. Without God, there would be nothing. But because God is, everything is.

When Moses asked God for His name in Exodus 3, He didn’t say, “I’m a higher power.” He said, “I AM WHO I AM.” And the very first thing that God reveals about Himself in that name is that He is personal; that He can see; He can hear; He can know; He can speak; He can relate to those creatures that He made in His own image. He is the God Who brought up His people out of the land of Egypt. He’s a God with a name, a God with a personal history with us.

When Moses asked God for His name in Exodus 3, He didn’t say, “I’m a higher power.” He said, “I AM WHO I AM.” And the very first thing that God reveals about...

“Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." (Exodus 3:5)

What made the ground upon which Moses stood holy? Was there anything particularly sacred about the dirt under his feet? No. What made that piece of land special was the presence of God. What made that ground holy and different from any other ordinary piece of land was that it was in that place that there was an intersection; it was there that there was a manifestation, a divine visitation; it was there that the natural earth was touched by the supernatural presence of God.

“Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." (Exodus 3:5) What made the ground upon wh...

God is both transcendent (above and beyond creation) and immanent (present, active, and involved within creation), existing as an infinite, sovereign being who is simultaneously "God with us". We see this combination of transcendence and immanence in the burning bush, where God is making Himself known, or immanent, by visiting Moses in this encounter in the desert. This is a theophany, a visible manifestation of the invisible God. But more specifically, it is a Christophany, a pre-incarnate manifestation of Christ, appearing as the Shekinah glory.

The Shekinah represents the visible, manifested presence of God in the Old Testament, often appearing as a cloud, fire, or brilliant light. It is interpreted as the pre-incarnate Christ, foreshadowing his dwelling (immanence) among humanity in the New Testament. Listen to Pastor Scott’s message as he points out several examples of Christophany found in the Old Testament.

Exodus 3:1-3 and the account of the burning bush give us a biblical example of what we call theophany, a visible manifestation of the invisible God. So it’s not so much what was in that bush; it’s Who was in that bush.

Last Sunday we looked at the circumstances surrounding the birth of Moses and his rescue from the decree of the Pharaoh that the newborn male children of the Hebrews would be put to death. As we pick up the story leading up to the episode of the burning bush, we see what happens after Moses has been adopted by the daughter of Pharaoh and brought into Pharaoh’s house and into his family.

In Exodus 3, Moses saw a bush that was burning yet was not consumed by the flames. When he turned to look at it, God gave him one of the most profound theology lessons recorded in the Bible. There, God revealed Himself in a remarkable way, and His revelation in the burning bush continues to have relevance for believers today. Before we get to Exodus 3, however, it’s important that we look at the early period of Moses’ life, leading up to his encounter with God at the burning bush.

For the Christian, Resurrection Day is the most important day. For without Jesus’ Resurrection, there is no Christian faith. In his letter to the Corinthian church, the Apostle Paul wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” (1 Cor. 15:17). But Jesus Christ has been raised. And the day is coming when all creation will see the resurrected Jesus when He returns in glory and honor. This promise of Jesus coming again continues to prompt hope and faith that we too will meet our Lord in the future. And we can have this hope because we have this truth: He is risen! He is risen indeed!

Palm Sunday is the day we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, one week before His resurrection. As Jesus entered the holy city, He neared the culmination of a long journey toward the Cross. As King, He would wear a crown of thorns. And as King, He had come to save the lost, and now was the time—this was the place—to secure that salvation.
