Aspen Grove Wreaths Across America Day Volunteer Guide

10:00am
· Section Leaders will meet for a briefing at the ceremony tent.
10:15- 10:45am
· Volunteers will be directed to the NW corner of Aspen Grove Cemetery (2043 Sunnyside Ave, Burlington) where the newest Veterans Memorial is located. Assemble near the tent. PARKING will be along the roadways in the Cemetery. Overflow parking will be at Sunnyside Elementary School across from the Aspen Grove Cemetery entrance.
11:00am
· At the Veteran's Memorial we will have a short Wreaths Across America Ceremony. Importantly, we will demonstrate the proper way to lay the wreaths and say the names. At the conclusion of the demonstration we will release “grave specific” family members first. Then we will release volunteers to their choice of sections of the cemetery to place the wreaths.
· The cemetery will be separated into (20) sections for the wreath placement. Volunteers will either walk or drive to their section based on distance. The number of wreaths needed will be pre-placed in each section.
· Each veteran gravesite within the sections will have a small orange locator flag. After performing the proper wreath placement procedure, the volunteer will remove the orange flag and return the flag to the bucket located near the wreaths for that section.
· Each section will have a Section Leader (usually in a yellow volunteer vest.) These individuals will be available to direct volunteers and answer questions.
OTHER STUFF:
*Plan to walk, a lot. Plan for the cold, the rain, the snow, and generally being outdoors for 2-3 hours total. Wear appropriate winter gear and hiking boots.
*We have limited bathroom access. Bathrooms are located in the Aspen Grove Office.
* Please make sure everyone who wants to place a wreath, gets a chance to place a wreath. We're not in a hurry so please take time to perform a meaningful moment with each veteran.
*When all wreaths have been distributed, the two Location Coordinators (Chip & Mike) will perform one last double-check to make sure every grave has a wreath.

🌳 Saluting Branches at Aspen Grove Cemetery 🌳

Today, Aspen Grove Cemetery is honored to be a chosen site for Saluting Branches – a National Day of Service.

On this special day, tree care professionals across the country volunteer their time and expertise to care for trees and landscapes at properties dedicated to our nation’s veterans.

We are deeply grateful to the volunteers who are working in our cemetery today. Their generosity and skilled work not only improve the beauty of our grounds but also honor the men and women who served our country.

To all those giving their time and talent through Saluting Branches....THANK YOU! Your service ensures Aspen Grove remains a place of dignity, respect, and remembrance. 🇺🇸

How it works? www.salutingbranches.org

Saluting Branches is typically held on the third Wednesday of September each year, and volunteers sign up in advance to participate.
All participants receive training and safety instructions before the event.
The event organizers coordinate with the location staff to determine the work that needs to be done and any safety considerations.

Section 2: The Event

On the day of the event, volunteers gather at the location and are assigned to teams to work on specific areas.
The work typically involves pruning, planting, and removing dead or hazardous trees and branches.
The volunteers work throughout the day, taking breaks and lunch together as a group.

Section 3: Impact

Saluting Branches has a significant impact on the environment and the communities it serves.
By caring for trees and landscapes, volunteers improve the appearance and safety of the properties, which are important symbols of our nation's history and service.
Additionally, the event provides an opportunity for the tree care industry to give back and make a positive impact in their communities.
If you're interested in volunteering for the annual Saluting Branches event, visit their website to sign up and learn more about this meaningful and impactful program. Your contribution will not only honor our veterans but also help care for the environment and strengthen our communities.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day Cleanup Reminder 🇺🇸
As part of our seasonal care, Memorial Day Cleanup will take place on the 2nd Monday following Memorial Day at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Flowers you wish to keep should be removed by June 8.

🌼 What you need to know:
Artificial flowers and decorations placed in the grass outside the concrete border are only permitted for Memorial Day beginning one week prior to the holiday and must be removed within 13 days after.

These in-ground decorations need to be cleared so our crew can safely mow and w**d eat around monuments and maintain the cemetery’s beauty.

✅ You do NOT need to remove:

Decorations in permanent vases

Saddles on top of monuments

Items on a single-hook shepherd’s hook

Decorations placed directly on the monument or its concrete border

Flag holders (they are always permitted)

Thank you for helping us honor your loved ones while keeping Aspen Grove looking its best for all who visit. ❤️
